Review: RAVISHED BY A HIGHLANDER

The late 17th Century is a time of political unrest in England as both Protestants and Catholics are desperate for control of the throne. Lady Davina Montgomery is the firstborn child of a very powerful family, and she is also the Crown’s biggest secret. Hidden away at birth by her parents, she is raised by the good sisters at Saint Christopher’s Abbey while under the heavy guard of English soldiers. Unknown to Davina, she is betrayed by someone she loves and trusts, and her family’s enemies attack the abbey intending to leave no one alive. Robert MacGregor, the firstborn son of a powerful Scottish laird, is on his way to England to be with his father who is pledging his support to the new king, James of York. Rob and his group of Highlanders happen upon the burning abbey and rescue Davina from certain death. Though he knows Davina holds a secret that could bring destruction to his clan, he vows to protect her at any cost and takes her to his home on the Isle of Skye. Though they were both raised to honor family loyalty and responsibility first, the desire that grows between them cannot be denied. Ultimately Rob and Davina much choose between a life together that would endanger those they love or being apart and fulfilling family duty beyond their choosing.

Ravished By A Highlander is an exciting combination of historical fact and fiction. It is a tale of love and passion battling against duty to family and society. Paula Quinn has created intriguing characters to bring this significant time in history to life. Robert MacGregor is a strong, responsible man who has been raised to one day become laird of his clan. In doing so he has put aside finding love and true happiness for himself. Davina Montgomery is a lost soul longing for a simple life of love and a family of her own. Rob and Davina are able to find what is lacking in their lives in each other, if they can only defeat the enemies threatening to destroy them. This is the first book I have read by Paula Quinn, and I was very impressed. I would love to talk more about the historical figures used in the story, but I do not want to give away Davina’s secret! I will let you discover them on your own. Ravished By A Highlander is the first of the Children of the Mist series. I’m looking forward to reading the next book titled Seduced By A Highlander featuring Rob’s amorous younger brother Tristan MacGregor.

Review: RAMPANT

"The unmistakable sound of a woman being pleasured echoed through the woods above the village of Carbrey.  The sound was deeply sensual, and powerful - as if she dared anyone to defy her needs."
So begins Rampant, Saskia Walker's sensual and haunting tale of witchcraft and ghostly possession in an enchanted Scottish village.  Zoe Daniels is a practical personal assistant from London on holiday in Carbrey.  She rents a seaside cottage called Her Haven, which unbeknownst to Zoe is haunted by the restless spirit of the former owner, an 18th-century witch named Annabel McGraw.

Upon arrival at Her Haven, Zoe finds that the entire town of Carbrey has an eerie, powerful hold on her.  She senses her control slipping as she is taken over by her sexual desires.  Her encounters with certain locals add to her unease.  She meets Elspeth McGraw the cottage caretaker and postmistress, Crawford Logan the local boat builder, and a mysterious restaurateur named Cain Davot.  But the one she is most captivated by is her sexy neighbor Grayson Murdoch who seems just as intrigued with her.  She soon discovers that a coven of local witches lead by Cain Davot who practice the dark arts and thrive on sexual energy want to use her as a vessel to reincarnate Annabel.  White witch Grayson is determined to keep that from happening.  And Annabel's spirit seems to have an agenda all her own as she desperately tries to communicate with Zoe through visions.

I loved this story.  It was beautifully written.  The descriptions of the characters, town and surrounding landscape were amazing; I could easily picture myself there, sharing the experiences with the characters.  The coast of Scotland sounds like such a beautiful, magical place!  The book flows nicely, and the erotic scenes blend smoothly into the story and never overshadow the plot.  I really enjoyed the paranormal aspects of the story.  I couldn't wait to find out Zoe's fate and the real story behind Annabel's death centuries earlier.  I highly recommend Rampant to fans of erotica and paranormal romance.

On My Wishlist (3)

It is time for On My Wishlist hosted by Book Chick City every Saturday.  Actually, this week's books I have just pre-ordered from Rhapsody Book Club (which I love!).

(Historical Paranormal Romance)

Loved, loved, LOVED the first book in this series, Dangerous Highlander: A Dark Sword Novel, so I am very excited for the next one.  An angry god trapped in the bodies of three immortal brothers.  Did I mention that the brothers are super sexy Scotsmen?  Enough said!

Blood Born by Linda Howard & Linda Jones
(Contemporary Paranormal Romance)

This is an upcoming vampire romance...I've heard great things about it.  RT Book Reviews gave it 4-1/2 Stars.  I'm always looking for new vampire romances.

(Erotic Paranormal Romance)

Joey W. Hill's Vampire Queen series is published by Berkley Heat, so I believe this book is considered erotica.  Very hot!!  A woman named Anwyn finds herself trapped between the desires of two men, a vampire and a vampire hunter.  I'm intrigued!

Review: HIS DARKEST HUNGER

His Darkest Hunger is the exciting debut novel from Juliana Stone and the beginning of her Jaguar Warrior series.  Jaxon is a jaguar-shifter and the leader of a governmental paranormal anti-terrorism unit (PATU) whose members also include a vampire, sorcerer and a human named Libby who is Jaxon's former lover.  Three years earlier, the team is ambushed and a fellow teammate and shifter, Diego, is killed.  The team then discovers that Libby has disappeared.  They believe she has betrayed them by giving information of their location to an organized crime family of shifters.  For the next three years, Jaxon is consumed with hatred for Libby and the need to find her and have his revenge.

Jaxon finally gets the opportunity to punish Libby when he is given intel on her whereabouts presumably from his supervisor and told to kill her.  But his desire to know the truth keeps him from pulling the trigger.  The Libby that he finds is but a shell of the woman he once knew.  She is physically weak, emotionally fragile and has no memory beyond two months ago.  As he is studying Libby, an attempt is made on his own life.  Though his hatred for Libby remains, a seed of doubt has been planted in his mind.  He takes her back to PATU headquarters in New York in hopes that her memory will return.  Once her past becomes clear, Jaxon realizes that all is not as it seems.

His Darkest Hunger is a fast-paced, heart-wrenching story of love and betrayal.  The author builds an exciting world full of Azetc myth and dark magic.  Jaxon is the ultimate alpha male hero.  At first it may appear that Libby is weak and needs to be saved, but we soon discover how strong and brave she is.  Ultimately the two must put aside their animosity and learn to trust each other again to fight the dark forces bent on destoying them both.  The story ends with a nice opening for the next book in the series, His Darkest Embrace.  I'm looking forward to reading more!

Review: HUNTER'S MOON

Leigh Tyler is a former kindergarten teacher whose world is shattered when her family, including her fiance, is murdered by a white werewolf.  Soon after, she is recruited as a member of the Jager-Suchers, a secret organization of werewolf hunters.  Her leader Edward sends her to the town of Crow Valley, Wisconsin, to investigate unusual werewolf activity, as it appears there is a werewolf killing and eating other werewolves.  Edward also wants Leigh to train a new Jager-Sucher recruit named Jessie McQuade.

Upon arrival in Crow Valley, Leigh meets a mysterious drifter named Damien Fitzgerald.  Since the death of her fiance, Leigh has avoided men and focused her attention on hunting down the white werewolf that murdered everyone she loved.  But Damien awakens something in her that she thought had died with her former life.  However, there is something about him that is not quite right.  Leigh soon fears that Damien may be the thing she has devoted her life to destroy.

Hunter's Moon is the second book in Lori Handeland's Nightcreature series.  The story is suspenseful with fascinating characters.  Leigh is a strong, clever, kick-butt heroine.  I enjoyed the tense relationship between Leigh and Jessie.  I do feel like Damien was a bit short-changed as the "hero" in this book; the secondary characters, Jessie and Will (Jessie's sexy, bookish boyfriend), get about as much attention as Damien does.  The story is full of sexual tension with very hot love scenes, but I wouldn't say romance is a big focus.  Though part of a series, this book could be read stand-alone, but I highly recommend reading Blue Moon first to hear Jessie and Will's story.  I really enjoyed Hunter's Moon, and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

And the winner is...

First, I want to say "thank you" to all of my new followers and to everyone who entered my first blog contest!   I've had a great time meeting fellow bookworms and book bloggers.  I'm working on adding a few regular features to my blog, so please stay tuned.  And, of course, there will be more contests in the future!  (I love hosting them as much as I love winning them!)  Without further adieu, the winner of the Paranormal Romance Prize Pack is...

Review: CARVED IN STONE

I have an obsessive-compulsive habit of having to read a series in order.  Anyone else?  While browsing the bookstore one day, I came across a new release titled Legacy of Stone.  The blurb on the back had me hooked right away, and, of course, I bought it.  Before reading I did my "Is it part of a series?" check.  Turns out Legacy of Stone is actually Book 3 of Vickie Taylor's Les Gargouillen series!  Of course, I had to start from the beginning.  Here is my review of Carved in Stone, Book One:

Rachel Vandermere is haunted by the memory of her parents' violent murders by a monster with large wings and claws when she was a young girl.  No one believes her story.  As an adult she is determined to find the truth about what happened.  Rachel uses her position as an Interpol agent to find clues that may lead her to the monster that killed her parents.  On assignment, she meets Nathan Cross, an art professor who is also a griffin-shifter and member of a dying race called Les Gargouillen (gargoyles) created over a thousand years ago to protect humans from evil.  Nathan is instantly drawn to Rachel, but he feels he must hide his true nature not only to protect the secrets of his own kind, but also to keep from driving her away.  Rachel falls in love with Nathan, and when she discovers the truth about her parents with his help, she must question her views on good & evil and what a monster truly is.

This book was original and well-written.  The author built a paranormal world loosely based on an actual legend - the Legend of La Gargouille from very early medieval times.  In Carved In Stone, the gargoyles are not stone statues, but rather shape-shifters of all kinds of fantastical creatures, like griffins and dragons.  Like Rachel, Nathan is also facing his own trials.  He has been excommunicated from Les Gargouillen because he challenged their established traditions, yet they need his help to face a coming evil that threatens their existence.  At the end this evil threat remains a mystery and is probably a set up for the next book in the series.  There was a surprising twist in regard to the death of Rachel's parents.  The world of the gargoyles is dark and exciting.  I'm looking forward to reading more from Vickie Taylor.

Interview with Paranormal Erotica & Romance Author Laura Stamps

Laura Stamps is an award-winning erotica and paranormal romance author of over forty-five books.  Her work has been published in over a thousand magazines, literary journals, and anthologies. She is the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize nomination and seven Pushcart Award nominations.  Laura is a Wiccan Faery Witch, Empath, and Psychic, and the characters of her novels offer readers a realistic portrayal of contemporary Pagans living in the South.  Her latest release is A VAMPIRE'S KISS:  BOOK ONE OF THE MANIGAULT VAMPIRES.  (See my review in a separate post below the interview.)

1.) Tell us a little about Laura Stamps the writer and the Wiccan Faery Witch. Also, tell us about the "Sex Witch" part!

Funny you should ask, because they all work together. Since I'm Pagan I wanted to create a series (The Witchery Series) that would show readers what everyday Pagans are really like. No Harry Potter fluff in that series. And, no, I don't ride a broom. But Pagans do use brooms in rituals. So you will find real spells, rituals, and chants mixed with romance in this series. All of my other series are spin-offs from this main series. Okay, back to me. I'm also an empath, psychic, and two-natured Fey. The Fey are very sexual people. So a Wiccan Faery Witch is just another name for a Sex Witch. Perfect for me because I inherited my raging libido from my tomcat dad. So it's only natural I would be a very sexual Pagan, and I would write erotica. This might seem odd unless you have an intense libido. But everything is sexual to us. That's why I had so much fun with Sara in "A Vampire's Kiss." All my characters are fictional. But in Sara's case I thought it would be fun to make her a clone of me. So I gave her my free-spirited nature and my raging libido. Of course, that meant I had a realllllllly hard time keeping her out of bed with Dray. Oh, well... lol

2.) I read on your blog that you are the author of more than 45 books, and you received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Very impressive! Tell us about that.

Thanks! I went to college and studied to be an artist. And my paintings were sold all over the country in galleries. In fact my prints are still sold worldwide by my fine art publisher in California, Haddad's Fine Arts. My paintings are also on the covers of "The Witchery Series" novels. But as a creative person I was never fully satisfied. When I was thirty I decided to try my hand at writing, and that was it. I realized I enjoyed painting with words more than I did color. So I am self-taught as a writer. Which was not an easy path since I am also mildly dyslexic. In fact, when I was in high school my teachers always told me I had writing talent. But back then I didn't know I was dyslexic. I just knew grammar and spelling were very hard for me, and sometimes words and numbers moved around and did weird things. I had no idea why back then. All I knew was painting was easier, and I always won top awards for my paintings, so I went with that as a career. Until I was thirty. Then I dug out my college English books and studied like crazy to become a good writer. I bought books on writing, and I studied my favorite novelists until my poems and stories began to be accepted for publication in magazines. A few months later I bought a book on how to make booklets and run a booklet business. This was 1988, and that was the beginning of my publishing company, Kittyfeather Press. Twenty-three years later I have published over 45 books, some by Kittyfeather, and some by other publishers. My stories and poems have appeared in over 1000 magazines, anthologies, and literary journals. Seven have been nominated for "Pushcart Awards." The "Pulitzer Prize" nomination was in 2005 for "The Year of the Cat," a book of mystical cat poetry. It didn't win that award. But it did win the "Muses Prize Best Poetry Book Cover of 2005" (one of my paintings) and "The Muses Prize Best Poet of 2005." Yeah, I have been very blessed. But anyone who knows me knows I work like crazy too. So I am testimony to the fact that hard work and perseverance will help you achieve your goals, no matter how lofty they might seem. Nothing ever seems impossible to me. If want it, I'll find a way to achieve it. ;)

3.) In your books, you strive to portray the Pagan community realistically. Are there books featuring Witches or Pagans by other authors that you love?

Actually, no. And that's another reason why I wrote my series. Some of the authors we all love to read in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance are Pagan. Sometimes they let people know this, and sometimes they don't. But almost always the witchcraft in them is fantasy, and that bugged me. So I thought it would be fun to put the real thing in mine for a change.

4.) A VAMPIRE'S KISS is a spin-off of "The Witchery Series." Please tell us a little about that earlier series.

In "The Witches of Dixie," you meet four Witches who are struggling with marriage, business, and financial problems. They use their Pagan faith and empowering principles to pull through and overcome. Yeah, this is a very empowering book and actually contains the first four novels and novellas in this series. When I sold it to Trytium Publishing in 2007, all four were combined in one book. No romance or sex in this one. It's just a very empowering book for women. In "What Witches Want" one of the Witches is recovering from an abusive marriage and painful divorce. In the course of healing herself she meets a sexy two-natured man and finds true love. This is a sweet romance with tasteful sex and the most yummmmmy hero. Yowza! In "Call of the Witches" the heroine is tired of being plagued with bad-news boyfriends. She takes a two-year vow of celibacy and spends that time learning how to empower herself so she will be attracted to a good guy for a change. Three months before her celibacy vow ends she runs into a Wiccan Green Witch, who happens to be the sweetest, sexiest man she's ever met. Sparks fly, and her libido sizzles. In this book I thought it would be fun to write an erotica novel about a celibate heroine. Believe it or not, I still find plenty of ways for her to have lots of erotic sex in this one. For many it is their favorite of this series. The romance is sweet, and the sex is smokin' hot! I also include a checklist in this one to help women avoid getting involved with bad-news guys. So you'll find something for everyone in this series. It goes from empowering to romantic to erotic. I think that's why it's done so well since the day it was published. I should also mention I sell signed copies of this series on the "A Vampire's Kiss" site (the info is in the sidebar), and I include verrrry naughty personalizations in those books. *wicked grin*

The Witchery Series covers, and a look at Laura's paintings:

The Witches of Dixie: Book One of the Witchery Series   What Witches Want: Book Two of the Witchery series   Call of the Witches: Book Three of the Witchery Series

(If you would like to buy this series in paperback directly from Laura with personalizations, visit her site by clicking HERE.)

5.) What can we expect in the near future with "The Manigault Vampires"? Any new spin-off series planned?

Well, "The Manigault Vampires" is a spin-off from "The Witchery Series." In fact the first chapter starts the same night as the last chapter of "Call of the Witches" at the same party. So this series flows seamlessly from the main series. All of my series and spin-offs are trilogies ("The Witchery Series," "The Rune Witch Series," and "The Faery Witch Series"). Except "The Manigault Vampires." The plan is for that series to go for as long as it likes. Book Two is called "A Vampire's Embrace" and is about Dray's fun-loving brother, Val. Book Three is called "A Vampire's Desire" and is about their handsome cousin, Atwell Gibbs. I can easily see 10 books in this series. Vampires are just soooooo sexy, ya know? And I have no plans to leave this hot, sensual world of theirs I've created in Columbia, South Carolina. Nah, I'm having waaaaaaay too much fun!

Laura, thank you so much for taking the time to answer questions about your life and writing.  I look forward to reading more about your sexy vampires and witches!

Review: A VAMPIRE'S KISS (Chapters 1-6)

A Vampire's Kiss: Book One of the Manigault Vampires by Laura Stamps is a serialized, paranormal erotica series.  This review is for the first two very HOT installments (Chapters 1-3 & 4-6).

If you are addicted to steamy vampire romance novels, then you are like Sara Gadsden.  But vampires are just fiction, right?  Sara, a Wiccan Green Witch, attends a a Samhain party where she meets a gorgeous and mysterious man dressed as a vampire.  Little does she know, Drayton Manigault is not only a very wealthy businessman, but he's also a 145-year old real vampire!  The heat builds between them, and Dray brings Sara's wildest fantasies to life.  Soon Dray offers Sara a job working for his computer company, Manigault Technologies.  We are left to wonder, will Sara discover the truth about her vampire lover (and new boss!) in the next installment?

Right away we see an undeniable attraction between Sara and Dray.  The first installment is a wonderful tease, and then, oh my!  Their steamy greenhouse lunch date will leave you satisfied.  Sara's character is a delight; she's strong, sassy and knows just what she wants.  We even get a glimpse of her magical abilities as a Green Witch.  Our hero Dray remains a mystery.  We know that he's a very sexy Southern gentleman and a vampire, but we do not know much about his past or what is really underneath his seductive exterior.  How did he become a vampire?  How is he able to be out in the sunlight?  I'm looking forward to finding out more in the chapters to come!
