Book Tour Review: THE BEAUTY'S BEAST

THE BEAUTY'S BEAST
By E.D. Walker
Length: Novel
ISBN: 9781605921532
Lady Kathryn's father has sent her to court to find a husband, but being penniless and disinterested doesn't bode well for her success. Bored by the petty intrigues of court, she finds her loneliness is eased when the king charges her with the care of his newest acquisition: an uncanny black wolf. What the king doesn't realize is his remarkable pet was once Gabriel, his favorite knight, cursed into wolf form by an unfaithful wife.

The beast's too-knowing eyes and the way he seems to understand her every utterance convinces Kathryn the wolf is more than what he seems. Resolving to restore him, she doesn't count on the greatest obstacle being Gabriel himself. The longer he stays in wolf form as a captive of the court, the harder it becomes for him to remember his humanity. And to fight his wolfish urges to maim and kill.

As Gabriel and Kathryn grow to care for one another despite his horrific curse, rumors of an uncanny wolf reach the ears of Gabriel's former wife and her unscrupulous new husband, Reynard. Together, they plan to dispose of the king's pet, knowing if Gabriel ever regains his human form he could strip them of everything they have schemed so hard to gain.

Only Kathryn's affection and determination stand between Gabriel the wolf and Gabriel the man. But when Reynard returns to court, will Kathryn's love be enough to keep Gabriel from exacting a brutish revenge that will condemn the wolf to death?

E.D. Walker's The Beauty's Beast is a unique and tender adaptation of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.  The book's blurb provides an excellent summary of the story, so I won't repeat it here.  I thought it was rather intriguing to have the "beast" as a werewolf trapped in his wolf form because of the betrayal of his wife.  While living as a wolf, Gabriel can not talk to the other characters, but the author cleverly lets him speak to the reader through his inner thoughts.  I love how Kathryn knew he was more than just a wolf from the moment she looked into his very human blue eyes.  They formed a strong connection, and Kathryn loved and cared for him even though he was a beast.

This was a very romantic story, but it was a bit too mild for my taste.  As a personal preference, I like some heat to my romances these days.  Of course, the fact that Gabriel was in wolf form for most of the book definitely hindered anything physical between the two lovers!

The plot moved quickly, and it focused on Kathryn's struggle to have Gabriel hold on to the last of his humanity, while thoughts of revenge on his wife threatened to destroy him.  Kathryn was racing against time to change him into a man again before the beast took over his mind as well.

The Beauty's Beast was a beautifully written story, and it will appeal to readers looking for an old-fashioned, enchanting fairy tale.  I liked it, so I'm giving The Beauty's Beast 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Guest Review: ARCTIC WINDS

By Sondrae Bennett

Nothing will stop a wolf once he's found his mate...not even her own doubts.
After her skulk abandoned her four years ago, Samantha knew she would never truly be wanted. When she accidentally stumbles into a wolf town and is asked by their premier to stay, she believes it's the novelty of an arctic fox motivating him. She knows she'll be on her own again once he tires of her.

Jason finds himself pulled to Samantha from the moment she faints in his arms. His wolf is calling to him, telling him he's found their mate and the heat he feels for Samantha is impossible to resist. But his little fox is loaded down with emotional baggage and doesn't believe she's worthy of love. Can he overcome her fears? Or will pack jealousies and the local faxes convince her she doesn't belong with him before he has a chance?

Reviewed By: AsianCocoa

Arctic Winds was a sweet short read. The story was 62 pages long so there isn’t much I can say without giving away too much of the story. Samantha Walker is an arctic fox shifter who has been moving around on her own for years. While looking for another place to settle down, she stumbles onto a wolf-shifter town in Colorado. Hungry and too sick to hunt for herself she enters the town’s cafĂ© and meets Jason Callahan, the Alpha – Premiere of the pack. They are instantly attracted to each other.  But Samantha is unsure of the match and a long-term future with him because she is just a fox and he is the Premiere of his wolf pack.

The heroine had a strong independent streak but also had a lot of insecurities as a result of being abandoned by her family/skulk.  Jason was a typical Alpha who was very bossy towards her but was very protective as well. It was love at first sight and the relationship moved along very quickly. The conflict in the story was more about Samantha’s insecurities and not believing she was worthy of more than a quick fling. Jason is sensitive to this and tries not to push her too hard but he is also afraid that if he gives her too long to think she might run away from him. This was a nice romantic boy meets girl story. I give Arctic Winds 3 out of 5 stars.

MALCOLM Book Tour: Interview and Giveaway with Eliza Gayle

Welcome to this stop on Eliza Gayle's book tour!  Eliza is here to answer a few questions about herself and her latest release, MALCOLM.  Stay tuned at the end of this post for details on her fantastic giveaway!

Thank you for being with us today, Eliza!

Describe yourself in six words or less.

Reader, Writer, Marine, Persistent, Nutty & Friendly

Please share some juicy details about your latest release MALCOLM, and its hero Malcolm.

Malcolm is the third in the Black cougar series and the long awaited bad boy brother. LOL Not only has he caused a lot of trouble in the series so far, he kept me up many a night worrying about his story. To say he wasn’t easy to write is a bit of an understatement. But in the end he took control and had his say. Through the first two books Malcolm got away with a lot of bad things and I think we all knew that his payback was coming. Just maybe not in the form of a stubborn and secretive nearly six foot tall blonde. Suffice it to say there are lots of twists and turns headed his way. The only question is can he handle it?

Why did you choose to write about were-cougars?

I knew without much thought that I wanted to write shifters and after a bit of debate with my teenager and her friend on a really strange car ride, I settled on big cats. From there I felt the need to use a cat that would actually be found in the North Carolina mountains where I intended to set the book. So the choice was easy from there. Have you seen how tiny a bobcat is? I couldn’t see a small animal as one of my alpha male baddies.

What was your favorite scene to write in MALCOLM?

Since I’m not a die-hard plotter when it comes to writing my books there were many surprises along the way. However, call me evil but I believe in twisting up my characters to the point of emotional and sometimes physical pain. Those are always a joy to write. Hehe Without giving anything important away I can say there is a scene early on that takes Malcolm down a peg or two. The first time I wrote it I cried for him.

Do you have any interesting writing quirks?

I can’t even start a book without a title. We won’t even discuss delays I’ve suffered through because I couldn’t decide what to call a book. Sometimes it changes later but not usually because I want it too.

If I am writing a paranormal book I like to listen to music and I’m known to listen to the Twilight soundtrack over and over.

What was the last amazing book that you read?

Halfway to the Grave by Jeanine Frost. I know I know, it’s not a new book. I’m a latecomer to the series but OMG I haven’t loved a book that much in quite a while. I’m pacing myself through the rest of the series otherwise I might not get any writing done.

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?

Reading is probably obvious but in truth I was a reader first and I’ve always devoured books voraciously. That’s never going to change. I’m a TV and movie fanatic with a crazy devotion to True Blood and half a dozen other television shows and I’m tapping my foot awaiting Thor and the next Hangover movie. I also love to travel so you’ll often find posts on my blog about where in the world I’ve been lately. (a trip to Washington and Oregon is next)

What can readers expect next from you?

As I often do, I go back and forth between paranormal and contemporary so my next release in June is my first full length contemporary novel titled Submissive Beauty.

Where can readers find you on the web?

I’m usually not far from Twitter (@elizagaylebooks) and Facebook as ElizaGayle (unless I’m on deadline) and for the full blown details about me and my writing you can visit my website at http://elizagayle.net/

Eliza Gayle is the best selling author of a variety of paranormal and contemporary erotic romances. Her latest book, Malcolm, is the third installment in the action packed Black Cougar series and is now available from most ebook retailers. She currently makes her home in the gorgeous piedmont area of North Carolina as close to the water as she can get.

About the Book:

He can run be he can’t hide. Not from duty. Not from danger. And especially not from the woman who forces him to face the truth.

Malcolm Gunn’s time is running out along with his ability to shift. When confronted with his past he thinks he’s found a solution. With the help of a little rope, he can let nature takes its course. Unfortunately the woman who is the key to his existence harbors a powerful secret that will destroy them both.

Cheyenne’s been hired to track and retrieve Malcolm at any cost. Her only plan is to get in, get out and keep her sanity intact. In that order. But she’s been warned…If he catches her, he will stake his claim whether she is willing or not.

Deceit and lies bring them together. Murder puts them on the run. Their enemies are closing in and there’s only one, irreversible way out. Some choices can never be forgiven and one man’s anger can destroy it all…Malcolm.

Excerpt:
Malcolm Gunn stopped breathing at the shift of air in his house. His eyes popped open when the fur prickled along his forearms, warning him of the intruder nearby. He’d gone to bed hours ago but something had kept him from falling into a deep sleep and now he knew what.

Someone had been hunting him and was now in his home.

Nose to the air, he took a slow deep breath, seeking the scent of a hunter.

Cougar. Familiar.

The scent was unmistakable, one any other of his kind would recognize right off the bat. His eyes slid closed as he allowed the smell deeper inside while he sought an answer to what he faced. Definitely not one of his brothers but still a cougar. He couldn’t help but wonder what idiot would be so brave as to enter the lair of a black cougar without permission. He’d easily be within his rights to kill on sight with no questions asked. Yeah, if he was still part of the clan. As an outcast no one gave a shit about him and any aggression toward another cougar could easily lead to a visit from one of his brothers, The Death Enforcers.

He brushed his fingers across the hair on his chest to relieve the prickling another’s presence in his house created. The scent had a distinct underlay to it besides the basic aggression that always lay just underneath the surface of a were cougar on a hunt. A sudden flash of sweet reached him then and his body arrowed up from the bed, his bare feet landing silently against the hardwood floors.

A woman prowled his house. And not just any woman.

Malcolm crouched low to the ground, careful not to disturb the airflow around the room. Better not to let her know he was awake and lying in wait for her. He’d give her a little more time to get closer. His hand slid back underneath the single pillow on his bed and wrapped around the hilt of the hunting knife that he kept there. Nowadays the weapon was mostly used for gutting animals he’d caught, but habit made him keep it for protection as well. He had no idea what her intentions were but he wasn’t about to face her unprepared. It had been a long time since he’d had to kill a person and while the animal in him remembered it occasionally, the man didn’t miss it at all.

He listened for any telltale sign that would indicate her location. Nothing, as he’d expected. This woman knew what the hell she was doing. A floorboard ten feet from his bedroom door creaked quietly. He smiled slowly, a surge of satisfaction spreading through him. But she wasn’t better than him. The air in the house stilled again as he imagined her waiting and listening for any indication that he’d woken from the soft sound she’d made. He’d designed and created that little trap himself and if she’d been human she would never have heard it.

Would she keep going? By now, she would have followed his scent to this room, but no way in hell would anyone ever get through that door without waking him. If this was the woman he suspected, and his body screamed it was, she’d know that and be prepared. He glanced behind at the window over his bed and decided to approach this in a different way. If she wanted to play cat and mouse he’d be more than happy to oblige her—except, like it or not, she was about to become the mouse. He crept to the window and raised it without a sound, just enough to give him room to slip out.

Malcolm inhaled the night air deep into his lungs. The scent of earth and moisture clung to everything around him. This was his favorite time of the night, those quiet hours shortly before the rest of the world woke up. Nature was at its peak power during this period. She could overpower and overcome anyone she wanted at any given time but when Mother Nature rested along with the rest of the world, his animal longed to roam.

He slipped into the cover of trees that surrounded his temporary home. A feature he’d used to his advantage more than once these past weeks. The wet grass slipped cool under his feet and the cat ached for freedom.

Not yet. He couldn’t risk the pain.

He struggled to soothe the restless animal inside him. First we confirm the identity of the woman stupid enough to enter our home, then when she’s taken care of we’ll take care of our needs.

Emerging from the forest, he crouched outside the side door that led through the garage and listened. As best he could tell, she still hadn’t breached his bedroom but he needed to hurry because there was no telling what her plan was. The bitterness of a brewing betrayal clawed at his gut. He’d honestly hoped he’d never have to see her again. At least on a conscious level.

He slipped through the dark and around his Land Rover with ease. Not only did he know this layout like the back of his hand, he didn’t need light to see. A cougar’s vision meant he saw in crystal clear clarity with or without light so not much got past him just because it was dark outside.

He turned the knob and opened the door into the house. He’d not moved an inch and her sweet smell washed over him. While his brain worried about an unwarranted attack, his dick stood up and took notice, making it damned hard to think straight when all the blood in his body pooled into his groin and his pulse beat for the not-quite-a-stranger roaming his house.

Get a grip. He seriously doubted she’d come for the long overdue fucking.

But it had been a long time since he’d been with a female of his own species. For a while, he’d toyed with some witches that liked to dance on the dark side but even he’d grown bored with that after a while. While he enjoyed his fair share of trouble, there were just some things nature didn’t intend for you to mess with and sooner or later she would fuck back.

He looked down to see his cock had tented his shorts and he cursed the loose boxers he’d chosen to sleep in. This was all he needed. He’d grab her and she’d either laugh at her effect on him or find a way to use his condition against him. There were a dozen scenarios of how this could play out running through his head as he padded through the kitchen on his way to the living room. From the middle of the room he would be able to see the full length of the hall that stretched out in front of the three bedrooms in his house.

Malcolm slowed his steps, knowing he wouldn’t get much closer without being detected unless he controlled his breathing as well as his movements. He waited for his heartbeat to slow and his breath to slide in and out of his nose on a soft, barely there whisper.

The knife hand dropped to his side, still at the ready but not overly threatening as he took the two steps to where they would be forced to come face to face. Except—fuck. She wasn’t there. No way did she slip through one of the bedroom doors without him detecting her.

“Looking for me?”

MYTHIC Book Tour: Jae Lynne Davies Interview and Giveaway

Welcome to this stop on Jae Lynne Davies book tour!  She's stopping by today to answer a few interview questions and to talk about her latest release MYTHIC:

Welcome, Jae!

Describe yourself in six words or less.

Determined woman who enjoyed good stories

Which books/authors were your early influences? How did they lead you to write paranormal romance?

I’ve been fascinated with the paranormal from an early age, but I didn’t read my first romance novel until I was a young adult. Sherrilyn Kenyon was my first paranormal romance influence. Once I delved into the world of the Dark-Hunters, I knew I wanted to write in the same genre.

Please share some juicy details about your book MYTHIC.

Gianna Marino—the heroine in MYTHIC, was born a human/vampire hybrid. Because of what she is, someone discovered her secret. As a result, her parents were eliminated for the audacity of creating a new race. Now she’s hell bent on revenge, looking to kill the vamp responsible. But when she finds him, infiltrates his coven, and grows close to him, the objective and motive begins to blur.

She’s now attracted to her parents’ killer and fights the inevitable on a daily basis. Then the hero enters the picture with a problem of his own, turning up the heat. Passion ignites, secrets are revealed, and when nothing is what it seems, she’s left with a few decisions to make. Torn between her feelings for the hero, the villain, and the loyalty she feels toward her family, the conflict in this story is through the roof!

How will the story end? There’s only one way to find out!

Who was your favorite character to write and why?

The character that I’m writing at any moment is my favorite character, but Gianna Marino is closest to my heart. While all of my characters are a part of me in some way, I’ve given Gianna a great deal of myself. She and I share similar strengths and weaknesses, and I’d love to walk in her shoes for a day.

Favorite scene to write: steamy sex scene or action/fight scene?

Steamy sex scenes, hands down! I can’t decide which sex scene in Mythic was my favorite. Though I’ll tell you, there’s one after her first encounter with Nicholas that could melt glass, it’s that hot!

What is the hardest part of being a writer?

In my experience, the hardest part of being a writer is balancing time. As a wife, mother, and working full-time, it’s sometimes difficult to meet work count goals. Other times, I’m awake into the late hours of the night writing furiously. I’ve learned to take things one day at a time.

What was the last amazing book that you read?

“Sin Undone” by Larissa Ione was phenomenal!

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?

I love to cook and create new recipes. If I’m not sitting at my laptop, you’ll probably find me in the kitchen. My true passion in life would have to be my family. There’s nothing more important, and I enjoy spending as much time with them as possible.

What can readers expect next from you?

I’m currently working on the sequel to MYTHIC, titled BLOOD MOON. It features Dante—a secondary character from MYTHIC.

I’ve also recently contracted a short story with Tease Publishing called, “The Contract”. The story is an Urban Fantasy, featuring the Roman goddess, Diana. A release date is currently pending. Visit my website for more info. In the meantime, here’s the blurb:

The goddess of the hunt carries an entirely different meaning in Diana’s world.

A contract assassin for her father Jupiter, the Roman deity traded her traditional gowns for a crossbow and vowed to fulfill her duties by eliminating anyone who threatened the pantheon.

When she receives a contract to kill the sexy Cole Hunter—the heir to an artifact that could expose the existence of her people, she willingly sets out to meet her two week deadline and deliver Jupiter the man’s heart as proof of her success.

But when she grows close to her target, the heat between the two ignites. Diana develops feelings she’s never experienced and is faced with the decision to give Jupiter the human’s heart, or give Cole hers. The race is on to protect him from Jupiter’s wrath, before she loses him forever.

About the Book:

Gianna Marino is a human/vampire hybrid who is fueled by her thirst for vengeance for the murder of her family, and has little tolerance for distractions. While at a constant war with the two halves of herself, in a world in which she doesn’t belong, and tormented by a past that she hardly remembers, she vows to punish Mattias Vitale—the vampire responsible.

But during her infiltration of his coven, posing as a human with the desire to be turned, her game of seduction with Mattias creates a burning and mutual desire, when Nicholas Sutton—a dark and handsome stranger, intrudes on their play, threatening to expose her with an agenda of his own. One man is sexy and dangerous, the other is powerful and deadly. Both are vampires that want nothing more than to ravish her senseless, claiming her for themselves in a bond of body and blood, while she longs to kill one and bed—them both.

But when Gianna discovers a secret that blurs the lines between good and evil, forever changing the course of her existence, destiny will soon determine on which side she'll stand.

Roxanne St. Claire's Guardian Angelino Book Tour: Interview and Giveaway

Welcome to this stop on Roxanne St. Claire's Guardian Angelino book tour!  Roxanne is with us today to tell us about her two new releases, Shiver of Fear and Face of Danger, and to answer a few questions I sent her way:

Describe yourself in six words or less.

Relentless. Joyful. Maternal. Imaginative. Disciplined. Blessed.

Please give us some juicy details about your Guardian Angelinos series.

Juicy? Hmmm. The series is about a huge extended, blended Italian family of Angelinos and Rossis in Boston who start a security and investigation firm and name it The Guardian Angelinos. Not everyone in the family likes the Guardian Angelino name, I can tell you that. And that isn’t the only thing they fight about.

The Rossis were a family of five siblings, parents, and their grandfather Nino, until their two Italian-born cousins, Vivi and Zach Angelino, were orphaned and sent to America to live with their Uncle Nino. There’s a lot of love, a lot of arguments, and a lot of great food.

All of the siblings and cousins have special skills – some are law enforcement, some are investigators, and one is deep in the black ops. At the heart of the whole group in the grandfather/great uncle, Nino Rossi, who won’t reveal his age or his secret meatball recipe. That would be the juiciest detail of all, and if I told you, he’d drown me in Sunday Gravy.

Who was your favorite character to write and why?

Hands down, Vivi Angelino, the heroine of FACE OF DANGER is my favorite character. She fascinated me on every level. When I first created this slightly wild child, I wrote a woman driven by curiosity, who chooses a skateboard as her primary means of in-town transportation, who despises makeup, heels, and the girlier things in life. Who better to torture with the job of pretending to be an A-list movie star to lure and trap a serial killer who is targeting Oscar winners. The clothes and hair and makeup chafed Vivi, deeply. So, I had to know why. Why was Vivi so opposed to embracing her femininity? And why hadn’t she had a close relationship with any man?

The answers, as Vivi revealed them to me, were deep and painful. I loved discovering who Vivi was and helping her through her journey to happiness and love.

What was one of the most interesting things you learned in researching your book?

The poison used as a tool of terrorism in SHIVER OF FEAR is purified botulinium toxins. That would be…botox. If used properly, you get a smooth face. If turned into a gaseous form and released into a crowd on a subway or train…paralysis and death. Kind of made me want to embrace my fine lines.

What books have most influenced your life?

I cut my teeth on the masters of the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, and Louisa May Alcott. As a pre-teen, I read GONE WITH THE WIND (it took an entire summer) and that made a reader for life out of me. As a teenager, I glommed the glitz books: Sydney Sheldon, Judith Krantz, and early Sandra Brown. As an adult and new writer, I fell in love with Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. This all led me to write sexy contemporary romance with strong elements of suspense.

Book Tour Review: HONEYTRAPPED

By Justine Elyot
Blurb:
It's her job to snare him, but this trap might be more complicated than she thought.

When Tilly went into business as a private detective, she thought it would be all brilliant deductive reasoning and car chases. She was not prepared for the deluge of calls from suspicious lovers hiring her to entrap their love rat partners, but when times are hard, you take what's on offer - which is how, despite two left feet, she came to find herself learning the Argentine tango.

But is the tango teaching lothario all he seems to be? And when he makes his hot Latin moves on her, will she really be able to stay professional and resist them?

Tilly finds herself tangled up in the tango, hot on the tail of a mystery. She even manages to fit in a car chase, though the brilliant deductive reasoning doesn't work out so well. But where her brain might miss out, her body certainly doesn't. They don't call sex the horizontal tango for nothing, it seems.
oOoOoOo

Honeytrapped is a fun and very sexy "girl entraps boy" story.  Before reading this, I was not familiar with the term honey trap, but it's the perfect way to describe what happens.  Tilly is a down on her luck private detective.  With bills piling up, she reluctantly takes on a client who wants her to tempt her fiance into cheating, just to see if he'll take the bait.  Pretty and petite Tilly is the perfect honey to trap a cheating man.  The fiance in question happens to be a tango instructor, and soon Tilly signs up as his newest student.  Only Tilly gets way more than she bargained for as Mr. Hot and Sexy Tango Instructor is not as he seems.

This is a very quick read, and I can't say much about the plot or characters without giving away major spoilers.  I will say that Honeytrapped is packed with plenty of wicked sex between an unlikely pair of fun characters - a sultry dance instructor and an awkward private detective with two left feet.  I would have liked a bit more emotional depth with the characters, but their naughty activities are sure to get your pulse racing in a short amount of time!  I liked it, so I'm giving Honeytrapped 3 out of 5 stars.

Book Tour: Larissa Ione's ETERNAL RIDER Feature and Giveaway

ETERNAL RIDER
By Larissa Ione

ISBN: 9780446574495
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Release Date: 4/01/2011
Format: Mass Market Paperback

They are here. They ride. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.

Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

EXCERPT:
Ares spun the woman around so her back was to the sea, her bare feet close to the cliff edge. “Who are you?” He gripped her shoulders firmly, his fingers digging into the blue flannel pajama top dotted with penguins. She wore penguin pajamas.

“P-please…” The wind whipped her sandy-blonde hair into her face, and some weird impulse made him want to brush it away.

He resisted. “Who are you?”

“I’m not…not a demon.” Her breath sawed in and out of her so violently that he half-expected her to pass out.

“What is your name?”

She blinked as if she didn’t understand the question, and when he repeated it, she finally murmured, “Cara. It’s Cara. I’m not a demon. I swear, I’m not a demon.”

“You keep saying that.” He inhaled, once again catching the bitter scent of her terror, but also, the faint, smoky tint of hellhound. She’d been in direct contact with one. “Why were you handling a hellhound? Were you attacked?”

A tiny squeak came from her, as if fear had closed up her throat. Hellhounds could do that to a person. But he didn’t have time to coddle a delicate female through her trauma. He needed intel, and he needed it now.

He snapped his fingers in front of her face, startling her out of her freaked-out trance. “Did The Aegis save you?”

“The men? They…they tried to kill the pup.”

Ares couldn’t decide if she was a little…slow…or just scared out of her gourd. Maybe both. Even so, she should be a little more agitated in his presence, and he wondered what was up with that. He took a deep breath and spoke slowly, even though he didn’t have the time or patience for this shit. “Yes, I’m sure they tried to kill it. It’s their job.”

“To kill dogs?”

“Demon dogs. You know, hellhounds?”

“This isn’t real,” she whispered. “I want to go home…” She shook her head, backpeddling wildly. “No, not home! Those men are there. This isn’t real…”

Shit. He was losing her. Before she could go into a complete meltdown, he gripped her by the shoulders and bent to peer directly into her eyes. Which were the exact color of the sea below when the sun hit it just right. Crystal blue with flecks of green and gold. Stunning.

“Listen to me. I need to know if you saw another man in that room. Long blond hair. Angelic.”

She nodded, her wide-eyed gaze locked onto his as if she were afraid to look away. As if he was a lifeline and if she let go, she’d plunge into an abyss of insanity. “Where is Hal?”

“Hal?”

“The dog.”

She’d named the hellhound? The things were mean as fuck, ravenous, horny…suddenly a sinking suspicion made his gut plummet. Had the hound given her a Hell’s Kiss? Nah. They never, ever did that to humans.

And yet…he leaned in, and as he got closer, the odor of fear and beast gave way to a more feminine scent. She smelled clean, like a spring meadow, with soft floral undertones. His cock jerked, the stupid bastard. The woman was terrified, human, and possibly shackled to one of the most vile creatures to have ever been spawned in Sheoul.

“W-what are you doing?”

He didn’t reply. He touched his lips to hers. A shocked gasp escaped her, and damn, she tasted sweet. There was a faint mint tang of toothpaste on her breath, and as he stroked his tongue across her satin lips, he got the telltale numbing tingle of the hellhound’s kiss. Which explained why she wasn’t combative with him — by bonding with Cara, the hound had brought her over into the supernatural world. She was still human, but with…enhancements.

He should have retreated, right then and there, but her mouth was soft, her body ripe with curves, and he hadn’t kissed a woman — a real human woman — in thousands of years. Head swimming, he tugged her against him. This was unexpected, amazing—

Sudden, stabbing pain lanced his groin. He grunted out a curse, doubled over and clutched his balls, which she’d cracked with her knee.
About the Author:

I began writing the way so many writers do—the moment I learned to wield a pencil. But even as a child, I didn't write "kid" stories. I preferred something more dramatic. Something that didn't include Dick, Jane, and a dog named Spot. I wanted my characters to be named Dracula and my dogs to have names like White Fang or Cujo. I'll always have my parents to thank for that. They never censored my reading material (though I suspect that if they had truly known what was between the covers of some of the books, they'd have been a little more careful,) so when other girls my age were reading Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume, I was immersing myself in Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Later, after I'd joined the Air Force and was in dire need of something to read between shifts at the weather station, I continued to read horror, but I'd branched out into fantasy, and then, finally, romance (though I admit I went kicking and screaming to the latter.)

Turned out that I loved romance! So I started writing it, but again, my style and voice leaned toward the dark, paranormal side. Fortunately for me, paranormal romance, as a sub-genre, was booming. I let my imagination fly, and soon I'd sold a series of dark, sexy paranormal romances to Grand Central Publishing.

I still read a lot of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and in fact, one of my all time favorite books about writing is On Writing, by my favorite childhood horror author, Stephen King. If you're an author or a reader, I highly recommend this book for an insight into an author's mind—which can sometimes be a very scary place.

Go ahead; Seduce your dark side.

Guest Review: THE FALLEN: RAZIEL

THE FALLEN: RAZIEL
by Kristina Douglas
Series: The Fallen, Book One
Mass Market Paperback, 384 pages
Published January 2011
Pocket Books
She was just an ordinary mortal...

“You’re dead” is so not what Allie Watson wants to hear. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like the dark, angelically handsome man who ferried her to this strange, hidden land. The last thing she remembers is stepping off a curb in front of a crosstown bus. Now she’s surrounded by gorgeous fallen angels with an unsettling taste for blood—and they really don’t want her around. Not exactly how she pictured heaven.

...until death catapulted her into a seductive world she never imagined.

Raziel is unsure why he rescued Allie from hellfire against Uriel’s orders, but she stirs in him a longing he hasn't felt in centuries. Now the Fallen are bracing for the divine wrath brought by his disobedience, and they blame Allie for the ferocious Nephilim clawing at the kingdom’s shrouded gates. Facing impossible odds at every turn, the two must work together to survive. Raziel will do anything to defend his spirited lover against the forces of darkness—because Allie may be the Fallen’s only salvation.

Reviewed By: AsianCocoa

Raziel introduces himself as one of the 20 fallen angels. They live in a hidden world named Sheol. Their enemies are the Nephilim who were sent by the archangel, Uriel to destroy the Fallen. The Fallen are cursed to spend eternity watching one mate after another die and to become blood eaters. The Nephilim’s curse is to spend eternity devouring flesh while reining terror and death upon the living. In exchange for an uneasy peace with Uriel the Fallen work as Death-takers ferrying human souls to their destinies.

Allie Watson is a smart, feisty, sensitive, hot tempered heroine. She is an atheist who writes snarky biblical murder mysteries. Say what? That might be the reason why she was destined to spend eternity in hell but then again maybe not. Raziel is a gorgeous, strong, stubborn hero with beautiful iridescent cobalt blue/black wings. Allie and Raziel get under each other’s skin and their banter is very entertaining. And the love scenes were so pretty! After one of these scenes Raziel unfurls his wings and wraps them around their bodies and the scene was so sexy and made me shiver and swoon!

Despite their really deep connection, Raziel stubbornly denies his true feeling for Allie but it only delays the inevitable. Turns out the Fallen encounter their mates when the women are still young girls. They watch over and protect the girls until they are ready to be taken to Sheol to be mated. Allie and Raziel see each other for the first time when she is seven years old and then again when she is thirteen. But after losing several mates during his existence, Raziel has sworn off all women and lives a life of celibacy. He ignores fate and does not go to Allie when she’s ready.

Fast forward 17 years – Raziel meets up with Allie again moments before she is to be hit by a bus. He does not recognize her. But in the split second that he realizes that she is to be condemned to hell he reaches out and pulls her back. When Allie is brought to Sheol no one wants her there. They all suspect she may be a demon or witch sent by Uriel to infiltrate them. But little do they know that there is actually a traitor among them.

The story is told in first person by Allie and Raziel. It was great to be able to get into the heads of both characters. Even better, both Raziel and Allie can read each other’s thoughts as well. This leads to some humorous dialogue and made me connect with the characters even more. Kristina Douglas did a wonderful job creating this secret world of fallen angels. She does a superb job weaving in the back story and the pacing & flow of the story were perfect. I really enjoyed this book! I’m giving The Fallen: Raziel 4 out of 5 stars.

DOWNSTROKE Book Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway with Desiree Holt

The Making of a Book
by Desiree Holt

Downstroke, the story of an anguished love and its chance to mature, is my 100th release. And it’s appropriate that for a milestone like this the book should be one that came straight from my heart.

I didn’t begin it as I do many of my stories, with a kernel of an idea or a character who wouldn’t get out of my head. Or in the case of one book, one line of dialogue. To tell you about the birth of the book I have to explain that in a life that’s been fortunately varied and exciting I spent ten years in the music industry, as a booking agent and a manager. The music has changed and technology has altered many things in the industry. But one thing hasn’t changed at all–the excitement of a performance and the magic that an electrifying performance brings.

Driving into town one day I happened to pull an old cassette out of the console in my truck (yes, I know, cassette – LOL! That’s how long ago I was in the business!). It was the recording of a concert with a major headliner that one of my bands opened for. As I listened to the music I was transported back to that night in the open air amphitheater, the crowd stirring restlessly as it waited for the concert to begin, the notes of the band tuning up behind the curtain. The anticipation that something magic was about to happen.

Except for one story I hadn’t really drawn on those years of experience in my writing but now ideas began dancing around in my mind. I wanted people to know what it was like in the industry, to share the excitement I’d felt so many times over those years. I’d have a hero-Dallas Creed-and a heroine (ultimately named Charley) and against a backdrop of the music business and the tension of a stalking killer I’d tell their story.

When I walked into my appointment that day I came face to face with the man who would become the inspiration for Dallas Creed-lean and muscular, mid forties, blond with streaks of grey in his hair. Smoky eyes filled with wisdom and anguish. I couldn’t wait to get home and get started.

As I listened to the music again on the way back the title popped into my head - Downstroke. The word refers to the motion of the hand from the top string to the bottom on a guitar. And in my book it would also refer to the rise of my hero, his fall to the bottom and his rise again. I could feel him in my heart-a man who’d thrown away a chance at happiness for the glitter of fame and success, who’d nearly died because of it and now was back on top again but with an emotional emptiness he couldn’t fill.

And then back into his life comes Charley, the woman he’s always loved. Top notch security agent with a successful business but also a void in her life. Twenty years of bitterness lies between them when she’s hired by his brother to find the killer stalking him.

This is a romantic suspense novel and a story of an exciting industry. But most of all it’s a love story of two people in midlife who have a chance to recapture what they threw away. Writing Downstroke was my reward to myself for all the time I’d spent learning my craft, earning my stripes. However you want to define it.

I hope you will love it as much as I do.

About the Book:

It’s been twenty years since Charley Roper and Dallas Creed parted with great bitterness. In that time she’s made a career for herself with the FBI and private security and he’s been a country rock music icon…tumbled to the bottom and risen again. Now someone’s trying to kill him and Morgan Creed wants Charley to protect his brother and find out who’s after him. When they meet again after all this time it’s obvious the chemistry is still there, stronger than ever. They’re older but are they wiser? Caught up in the bitter wash of memories and the tension of a killer in stalking mode, Charley and Dallas begin a roller coaster ride that is emotional erotic and suspenseful. Is their love strong enough after twenty years to pull them back together?

Twenty years ago Dallas Creed and Charley Roper were lovers with their entire future ahead of them. Until they split. Badly. Now he’s a country rock icon who made it to the top, hit bottom but is back at the top of his game. And Charley’s the private security specialist hired to protect him from an unknown killer in stalking mode. Caught up in the bitter wash of memories they begin a roller coaster ride that is suspenseful, emotional and erotic. Is their love strong enough to erase the past and bring them back together before the killer strikes again?

EXCERPT:
He spun away from the window and was beside me in three quick strides, his fingers closing over my wrist. “How about a little truth, Charley.”

He was completely in my space, so close to me a piece of paper would get stuck between us. He might be older and more used up but the rampant sexual heat was still there between us and the flare of it terrified me. I closed my eyes to hide what I felt, but his fingers tightened fractionally.

“It’s still there.” Statement, not question. “Look at me, Charley. Tell me you didn’t feel it the minute you walked into that trailer. Just like I did.”

Silently I cursed my traitorous body, the way his touch and his words made my nipples harden into diamond points and the lips of my cunt swell with desire.

Shit, shit, shit.

Before I could even take a breath, his other hand gripped my face and those lips I’d remembered every night since the last time I’d tasted them came down on mine with ferocious hunger.

The slightly rough surface of his lips, the heat of his mouth, the possessive greediness of the kiss brought back every memory I’d worked so hard to bury. When his tongue pushed inside and sought mine, I was lost. Truly lost.

I couldn’t move. Not just because Dallas had me gripped in both hands but because my legs were so weak I wasn’t sure they’d even hold me upright, and my brain had suddenly gone on vacation. When he finally lifted his head I was dazed and shaking. What the hell had just happened? What had I let happen?

We were still pressed together, tightly enough that I could feel his rock-hard erection hard against me through the worn denim of his jeans. Age and circumstance apparently hadn’t diminished that part of his anatomy at all.

“Go ahead, Charley.” His mouth was still only a breath away from mine. “Tell me you didn’t feel that the way I did. Tell me it didn’t affect you one bit. And tell me there hasn’t been a piece of your life missing all these years.”
