Guest Post by Mary Abshire and International eBook Giveaway

What's your favorite book or series?

Have you ever been asked the question? I can't tell you how many times people ask me. It seems many Goodreads followers use that question. For me, the answer is not an easy one. I can't narrow down my favorite to one. It's just not possible. Sorry.

I love to read paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I read a few other genres, but those two are my favorite. At least I can narrow that field down. As for books or a series… I've read so many that I enjoyed. Each book or series has a special quality that I love. Kim Harrison's series is awesome. I love the quirky comments, the characters, and the emotional impact. The Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur is another one I enjoy immensely. Half-wolf half-vamp investigator with a twin brother. The stories are great and involve other creatures. Then there's J. Frost's series with Cat and Bones. Great combo! These are just a few. I could go on with more.

My point being each series holds elements that are unique and make it great. I love the fantasy world created, the characters, and the story in each series. Each is worthy of being up there in the favorite category, therefore making it impossible for me to select just one as a favorite. Just my honest opinion.

I'm curious… Can you honestly say there is one book or series you like above all others? If you do, that's great and I applaud you. Can you share how you select that one favorite?

Giveaway: winner gets to select which book in the series they want to read. Ebook only, no print copy.

CLAIMING THE EVIL DEAD
The Soul Catcher, Book One

Half-demon Jessie Garrett is searching for an evil vampire that's been preying upon children. She wants to claim the rogue vamp's soul and send it to hell. To find the dead man walking she must partner with another bloodsucker, Drake, even though she doesn't trust him. While Jessie works with Drake, she learns not all vampires are killers and discovers the cold-blooded vamp is a temptation too difficult to resist.
After the fiend abducts another child and Jessie has a near fatal experience with vampires, she turns to Jeremy, a demon she bumped into at a club, and makes a deal with him for his help. Drake disapproves, and Jessie soon finds herself wedged between two volatile creatures. When the chance comes to save the child's life and claim the evil vamp's soul, she must decide whom she can trust—a vampire who cools her feverish desires, or a demon hell-bent on seducing her.

CATCHING AN EVIL TAIL
The Soul Catcher, Book Two

Half-demon Jessie Garrett wants to live a normal life among her friends and keep her soul catching ability a secret, but supernatural creatures keep popping up in her world. Adding to her struggles, her vampire lover remains out of the country, and when he offers no valuable explanation as to why he hasn't returned, she wonders if she should move on without him.
As if Jessie doesn't have enough worries on her mind, the demon yearning to seduce her shows up at her home. She longs to liberate herself from the debt she owes him, and when he asks for her help, she jumps at the chance to make a new deal with him—one that will guarantee her freedom. The only catch? She has to send the soul of a werewolf to hell.
Love, trust, and loyalty are on the line. Torn between her feelings for her vampire boyfriend, a hot Alpha wolf, and a demon vowing to protect her, Jessie must figure out her heart's true desires.

FIGHTING EVIL
The Soul Catcher, Book Three

Half-demon Jessie Garrett's battles seem endless. While Jeremy, the demon out to win her heart, teaches her how to fight, Jessie's relationship with her vampire lover, Drake, reaches a breaking point. Adding to her struggles, she must defend her life against a group of vampires who consider her a threat to their existence. Held captive on a remote island with both Drake and Jeremy protecting her, she is tested in ways she's never imagined. Jessie fights back; only her actions do more harm than good. The group offers her a choice, but no matter what she decides, her life will change forever.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL EVIL
The Soul Catcher, Book Four

Welcome to arctic Alaska, free from vampires and home to humans, demons, and werewolves.

After months of moving and hiding from the VETOV, Drake and Jessie settle into a small Alaskan town. They soon discover a serial killer is on the loose and it's a demon stealing good souls. As Jessie mingles with locals from the demon community and investigates the murders, she bumps into a werewolf she had hoped she would never see again. More trouble arises and Jessie reaches out to Alan, the Alpha she met in Arizona.

Together, Drake and Alan seek to eliminate the threat against Jessie, but removing the werewolves may come with a steep price for the Alpha.

In a matter of a few days, Jessie battles for survival, and her own soul, while maintaining a feverish love for Drake. Demons and werewolves won't stop this half-demon soul catcher from sending evil souls to hell, or spending eternity with her noble vampire.

BLOOD ETERNAL Book Tour: Guest Post and Giveaway with Marie Treanor

Dangerous Secrets
 by Marie Treanor

How exciting is this? My first guest blog in my virtual tour with BLOOD ETERNAL! Thank you, Diana for having me here at Book of Secrets. It feels a great place to start things off, because BLOOD ETERNAL is really all about secrets.

But perhaps I should begin by explaining a bit about the book. BLOOD ETERNAL is the finale of the Awakened by Blood trilogy that began with BLOOD ON SILK and BLOOD SIN. They’re a mixture of vampire romance, urban fantasy and old fashioned gothic – with a little modern steam to the romance.  In the beginning, academic researcher Elizabeth Silk accidentally awakens Ancient vampire Saloman, a powerful, sensual being out for revenge and world domination after being staked three hundred years ago.

Without getting into complicated explanation, let me just say that if ever two people needed to kill each other it was Elizabeth and Saloman. However, unwanted love got in the way and by the beginning of BLOOD ETERNAL the secret of their relationship is out. The undead world knows of it, and so do Elizabeth’s friends the vampire hunters.

However, there are many other secrets just waiting to erupt. Saloman’s domination has changed vampires’ behaviour, and now they see no reason to hide. But if vampire existence is revealed to humans, will it begin a devastating human-vampire war that humanity can’t possibly win?

Just about every character in BLOOD ETERNAL is hiding secrets, not least Elizabeth and Saloman themselves. Although they’re acknowledged companions, they keep secrets from each other. Secretive by nature, he doesn’t discuss all of his powers, or the minutiae of his plans with her. After all, she still opposes his quest to rule the world, and she’s quite capable of fighting – and killing – him. One secret that he has shared with her – the depth of his feelings for his cousin Luk, his friend and mentor whom he was forced to kill hundreds of years ago – is not known to anyone else. So when Luk is awakened by an old enemy, can Saloman really “kill” him a second time?

Saloman soaks up experience, physical and emotional, like a sponge. And yet he reveals very little emotion , even to Elizabeth. An immortal, thousands of years old – can his love for a mortal woman be anything other than transitory? He never says how deep his love goes, and she never asks, because her biggest secret is the strength of her desire to be loved as much as she loves him.

But she’s carrying other secrets too, not least the mysterious illness that afflicts her with increasing frequency. And the fact that she thinks about the immortality Saloman has never offered her…

And of course, Elizabeth’s friends are keeping secrets too. The hunter Istvan has always loved her from afar. Mihaela, troubled and lonely, will do anything to save Elizabeth from Saloman. And they’ve never told Elizabeth about the disturbing prophecy they uncovered, one that implies Elizabeth will kill Saloman but must still die to save the world.

And as revolt against Saloman spreads across the vampire world, who can he trust? His elder “son”, the reclusive Maximilian comes home to help – but he’s betrayed Saloman before, and can easily do so again. Saloman has taught this vampire everything he knows about secrecy!

Inevitably, all those secrets emerge. Saloman must face the secret fears and vulnerabilities  of his past if he’s to save Elizabeth from his enemies. The threads of doomed love, prophecy, divided loyalty and betrayal explode in a climactic confrontation that will change Elizabeth and Saloman, and their entire world, forever.

There is one more secret here: mine.

I’ve lived in this world with these characters for a long time. I’ve fought with them, shouted at them, torn my hair out over them, let them overrule me and drive me to distraction. And now that I’ve at last struggled through to the finale, I find, even more annoyingly, that I don’t want it to end.  Sh-sh.

Bodice Ripper Revival (3): Review and International Giveaway

Love Spell; Jan 2001

Book Blurb:
With the coming of the moon, wild happenings disturb the seaswept peace of Haskell Hall. And for the newest heiress, deep longing mingles with still deeper fear. Never has she been so powerfully drawn to a man as she is to Ian Griffith, with his secretive amber eyes and tightly leashed sensuality. Awash in the seductive moonlight of his tower chamber, she bares herself to his fierce passions. But has she freed a tormented soul with her loving gift or loosed a demon who hunts unsuspecting women as his prey?
Review:

The Wolf of Haskell Hall kicked off Love Spell's Candleglow gothic romance series back in early 2001.  The story is set in 19th century Cornwall, complete with spooky moors, a dilapidated manor house, and a frightening werewolf curse.  I was intrigued by the blurb because I love darker paranormal and historical romances, and this book was a combination of both.

The heroine is American heiress Delilah "Lil" Haskell Trent, the new owner Haskell Hall.  Lil knows that the former mistress of the manor died a violent death after venturing into the moors alone.  In fact, all former mistresses of Haskell Hall have met a similar fate, all of them killed by wolves.  Lil meets Ian Griffith, the mysterious estate manager with strange amber eyes, with whom she is inexplicably drawn to.  She finds out that she and Ian are the latest victims of a 100 year old gypsy curse involving the Haskell women and Griffith men.  The woman must find a way to break the curse or have her heart ripped out (literally) by her werewolf lover.

I thought this book was a fairly good read.  It took me a while to get into the story because it wasn't as dark and suspenseful as I'd hoped.  Ian and Lil had strong chemistry, but the tension wasn't drawn out long enough.  They were all over each other by the end of the first chapter!  I also thought that Ian was too much of a gentleman.  Sure, he was seductive and brooding, but I was expecting him to be a bit more primal.  The story also had some quirky secondary characters.  I particularly liked Lil's horse trainer, Shelly Holmes.  She was a paranormal investigator of sorts with ulterior motives of her own.  Shelly should have gotten her own book!

The Wolf of Haskell Hall turned out to be more of a historical romance rather than a true bodice ripper.  It is out-of-print, but I think it is worth getting if you're a fan of light gothic romance and can find a used copy.  I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Guest Review: STRONGER THAN SIN

Forever; Oct 2010

Book Blurb:
Dr. Liliana Carrera nearly lost her life to Wardwell scientists. She won't let them harm other innocent victims, like her new patient, Jesse Bradford. The former pro athlete had the best hands in the NFL . . . until an injury forced him to undergo Wardwell's experimental gene therapy. Now Jesse's gorgeous body is superhuman-but his strength comes at a price.

With Wardwell threatening his family, Jesse can't tell Liliana all he knows. Yet he can't resist her compassion . . . or her healing, erotic touch. As their passion flares, Jesse's body becomes dangerous and volatile. For evil men are plotting to change the face of humanity-and will destroy whoever stands in their way.

AsianCocoa's Review:

Stronger than Sin is the second book in Caridad Pineiro’s Sins series. This novel begins a few months after Sins of the Flesh and is Dr. Liliana Carrera’s story. She is the sister to Mick Carrera who was the hero in the first novel. Liliana is an orthopedic surgery resident who is asked by the FBI to work with a former patient of Wardwell labs. Jesse Bradford is a former professional quarterback. He sustains a football injury that ends his career. He bribes his way into Wardwell’s experimental gene therapy program in hopes of a cure for his degenerative bone disease but instead finds that’s he’s being turned into super-human killing machine.

Liliana has developed an inhibitor complex that has slowed down the mutant gene replication in her sister-in-law, Caterina who was in the first novel. A rogue FBI agent, Hank Whittaker along with the remaining founder of Wardwell Labs want this inhibitor to help sustain the lives of the other captive patients at the lab who have begun to die due to the experimental gene therapy.

Jesse’s particular gene mutation causes excessive bone to be produced at the sight of any inflammation or injury to his body. Eventually an exoskeleton will take over his body including his internal organs and eventually kill him. The inhibitor that is being used to slow down the DNA replication in Caterina unfortunately is of no use in treating Jesse’s condition. Liliana and her partner Dr. Carmen Rojas race against time to come up with an alternative inhibitor in order to save Jesse’s life.

Liliana is very distrustful of Jesse as he is former brawler and playboy and his numerous escapades have been documented by tabloids and news agencies. Even though there is definitely a sexual attraction to the former quarterback she does her best to maintain a professional doctor/patient relationship with him. Jesse is immediately attracted to Liliana but tries hard to suppress his feelings. His main concern is to stay alive and do what he’s told to keep his family safe from the death threats of Whittaker and Edwards.

This novel can be read as a standalone but I would recommend that you eventually read the first novel to get the back story on Wardwell labs and their experimental gene therapies. The reader is given just enough of the back story to keep up with the present plot line. But I would have liked to see a few more details about Liliana’s past and the lab. I did like both Liliana and Jesse. Liliana was a smart and sassy heroine. And Jesse was the typical sexy male athlete who had a soft spot for his doctor. Jesse was prone to violent outbursts as a result of the gene therapy and that added some darker moments to the plot. There wasn’t as much action in this installment as with the last book but the romance elements in this were enjoyable and Jesse and Liliana’s happily ever after was really sweet. The ending in this novel leads me to believe that the next book will contain more science fiction elements that were lacking in this novel. And even though I am not a big sci-fi fan I will definitely pick up the next book. Stronger than Sin gets 3 stars.

Review: AWAKENING

Burlesque Press; August 2011

Book Blurb:
Nerina has lived all her life as a mermaid, fascinated by humans and land but also repulsed by sex and unable to understand love. Her curiosity gets her captured by a human male intent on awakening her lust and turning her human. But Nerina doesn’t believe the legend is real and fears Kyros will kill her when he learns she can’t transform.
Review:

On the island of Meropis, the legend is that if a man can awaken the desire of a mermaid, she will transform into a human and be forever at his mercy.  The mermaid Nerina does not believe it to be true, because her people are so different than humans.  Merfolk reproduce like fish by laying eggs, so there is no need for sexual contact between them.  She sees the physical intimacy humans share as distasteful.

When Nerina is captured in a fisherman's net, she is terrified.  Mermaid fin is a delicacy to humans.  Luckily, her life is spared by the handsome man the fishermen call Master Kyros.  But what will he require of her in return?

Kyros has heard the legend too.  He has longed to possess a mermaid of his own, one he could transform into a woman.  So when his fishermen capture Nerina in their net, Kyros is delighted.  Kyros is determined not only to make her a slave to his touch, but he wants to own her heart as well.

Nerina cannot deny that Kyros stirs feelings within her that she has never experienced before.  Soon she is torn between her need for Kyros' touch and the love she has for her home in the sea.  Will she be able to give herself to him completely and transform?  And if she cannot, will he kill her or set her free?

AWAKENING is the most romantic story of Kitty Thomas' work.  Ms. Thomas is known for her dark erotica with Master/slave and non-consensual elements, and she stays true to her roots with Nerina and Kyros' tale.  However, in this story the romantic love between the hero and heroine is more pronounced, which I enjoyed, and the BDSM elements are lighter than in her previous books.

AWAKENING is a sensual adult fairy tale fans of literary erotica and erotic romance would enjoy.  I loved the premise of a man transforming a mermaid into a woman by awakening her desire.  It is written in Nerina's first person point of view, so the reader is able to experience her journey with her.  AWAKENING is a novella-length story of 21,500 words.  I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

(Belated!) Cozy Mystery Monday (Review and Giveaway): BUTTON HOLED

Berkley; Sept 2011

Book Blurb:
Working out of her button shop in a Chicago brownstone, Josie Giancola has become one of the country's leading experts on buttons. Her reputation draws a Hollywood starlet to the Button Box to shop for one-of-a-kind buttons to adorn her made-to-order wedding gown.

But after the Button Box is ransacked and the actress murdered, Josie's cozy world is thrown into chaos-and a killer is out to keep Josie's lips buttoned up...permanently.
Review:

BUTTON HOLED is a terrific start to Kylie Logan's new cozy mystery series.  Josie Giancola is a button expert with an extensive collection she showcases in her button shop in Chicago.  A couple of disturbing events turn this quiet button dealer's world on end: (1) walking in on two thugs robbing the Button Box, and (2) finding a famous actress murdered in her shop who had come to her to buy buttons for her wedding gown.  Could the events be related?  Josie's interest in the case is piqued when she discovers a mysterious hand-carved button at the scene of the crime, one only a button nerd like herself would be fascinated by.  When detective Nevin Riley requests her help in solving the case, Josie is happy to put her button expertise to work.

BUTTON HOLED was a fresh and enjoyable mystery.  I loved Josie's character.  She was funny, smart, quirky and very likable.  She was surrounded by a cast of interesting characters, including Detective Riley, with whom she previously had one awkward first date, and her gambler ex-husband Kaz, who may or may not be trying to redeem himself.  The mystery itself was well crafted, and there were several suspects who had the motive to kill the actress.  The ending was terrific, and I did not see the final twist coming!  I'm looking forward to the next book in A Button Box Mystery series.  I give BUTTON HOLED 4.25 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Interview and International Giveaway with Caris Roane

Today I am pleased to welcome Caris Roane to Book of Secrets.  Caris is the author of the Guardians of Ascension series.  Her latest release is WINGS OF FIRE.  Hi, Caris!

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

It took me a long time to think of myself as a writer. I mean from the time that I thought, yeah, maybe I could write a book until I was first published was a period of 9 years, which I understand to be quite common. But during that time, I was back-and-forth about it. So you could say it took me 9 years to really be able to say with a committed voice, I am a writer.

Please tell us a little about your latest release.

WINGS OF FIRE is the third book in my Guardians of Ascension series featuring winged warrior vampires and the powerful women they protect. This installment follows Warrior Antony Medichi and his woman, Parisa, both of whom have mythical 'royle' wings with the power to bring peace. Parisa 'ascends' to Second Earth and straight into a battlefield of death vampires, gorgeous winged warriors, and the evil Commander Greaves who intends to take over two dimensions. Oh, and did I mention this is a dimensional world, six dimensions in all?

What was your source of inspiration behind this book?

I've always loved vampires, ever since I can remember, though I can't exactly say why. And there are so many wonderful brotherhood books out there as well. So of course I wanted to write a brotherhood of vampires--I mean what could be better--but I also wanted to offer my own twist on the genre and one day, while writing, a really bad death vampire showed up bearing enormous, exquisite, glossy black wings! That was it--my vampires had wings. To that I added my six dimensions and Guardians of Ascension was born!

As for WINGS OF FIRE, the title, created by my agent and editor in a lively back-and-forth, totally inspired this novel. Since my vampires have wings, I went crazy with the wings this time and made them the focus of the plot.

For readers who are not familiar with your books, please share some background information on your series.

Well, ASCENSION is the first book of the series and came out this past January. The heroine, the very powerful Alison Wells, goes through her rite of ascension in the course of the story, which is to say that she's a mortal-soon-to-become-a-vampire and soon to live on Second Earth. In this book, I introduced Havily who then becomes the heroine of book #2, BURNING SKIES. Havily's story is a little different, since she is already ascended and lives on Second Earth. But she has emerging powers and because of it, the enemy wants her dead, so she needs the protection of her 'guardian', the powerful Warrior Marcus Amargi. In the course of their story, I also introduce Parisa and Antony and as I mentioned before, their story gets fully told in book #3 WINGS OF FIRE. And there you have it, a world at war, women with lots and lots of emerging powers, and hunky warriors who are driven to protect them and to bond with them.

How many books do you have planned for the series?

Right now, I have 10 books planned for this first part of the series. I know exactly which warriors will be featured in the first nine books and that the last book, #10, will star the infamous Endelle, the Supreme High Administrator of all of Second Earth. She's wonderfully profane, notoriously fashion-challenged, and designs all her own leather-feather gear!

Which character was the most challenging to write and why?

The most challenging character to write so far was Warrior Thorne. I just finished his book, OBSIDIAN FLAME, which will be out in May. Now the reason he was so challenging to write was because Thorne is 'the man'. He's the leader of the Warriors of the Blood and he has a mind-link with Endelle, so he serves as her second-in-command. I've had fans ask about him numerous times so I felt really strongly that of all my warriors, I needed to do right by him. He needed to grow in power and responsibility and he needed just the right woman. My editor called her 'Endelle-light', which will give some of your readers a clue as to what she's like. All-in-all, I WORKED REALLY HARD to get his story just right.

What books have most influenced your life?

Two books stand out for me. DUNE, by Frank Herbert and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, by Jane Austen. To date, I've written in both genres. Before I wrote paranormal, I wrote Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King. Writing my Guardians of Ascension series is very much the fulfillment of a dream to write big books set in a world I've created. I have two homages in my books to Frank Herbert. One is the precis in front of each chapter and the other is the use of the Convent concept. DUNE doesn't have a convent, that I recall, but there was definitely a Catholic-sisterhood feel, which I gave a nod to just for fun.

What are your top three tips for aspiring writers?

My top three tips for aspiring writers are: 1) read everything you can get your hands on, 2) write the kinds of books you love reading the most, and 3) study your tush off since writing is a craft like any other on the face of the planet.

Where can readers find you on the web?

Readers can fine me at carisroane.com and on Facebook. I can also be contacted directly at carisroane@gmail.com.

Can you leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from your book?

Here is the opening poem to WINGS OF FIRE. This has always felt so special to me because it reveals part of Antony's past and how much he was once beloved. The poem was written by his deceased wife, who died in tragic circumstances. Here it is:
My Beloved

In the twilight I think of him
He sees me in the wonder of his eye
I allow the air to breathe
He does not move with swift feet

His thoughts turn to me imagined
I wait beyond the faint boundary of time
He does not rush
My steps are measured

I have known his love from the beginning
I perceive his beauty angled, firm
He is earnest in his movements
Love rises on wings of fire

Maria Medichi, 707AD – 732AD
Translated by her husband, Antony, 1845

Review: GHOST ON BLACK MOUNTAIN

Gallery; Sept 2011

Book Blurb:
Once a person leaves the mountain, they never come back, not really.  They're lost forever.

Nellie Clay married Hobbs Pritchard without even noticing he was a spell conjured into a man, a walking, talking ghost story. But her mama knew. She saw it in her tea leaves: death. Folks told Nellie to get off the mountain while she could, to go back home before it was too late. Hobbs wasn't nothing but trouble. He'd even killed a man. No telling what else. That mountain was haunted, and soon enough, Nellie would feel it too. One way or another, Hobbs would get what was coming to him. The ghosts would see to that...

Told in the stunning voices of five women whose lives are inextricably bound when a murder takes place in rural Depression-era North Carolina, Ann Hite's unforgettable debut spans generations and conjures the best of Southern folk-lore—mystery, spirits, hoodoo, and the incomparable beauty of the Appalachian landscape.

Review:

GHOST ON BLACK MOUNTAIN is a spellbinding Southern Gothic about dark secrets, murder, ghosts and revenge.  The story is told from the points of view of five women, each one connected in some way to Hobbs Pritchard and Black Mountain, North Carolina.  Hobbs was an evil man.  A criminal.  An abuser.  A murderer.  But he was also deceptively charming and handsome, and easily won young Nellie's heart.  It was during the Great Depression that he married Nellie and brought her to live on the mountain.  It only takes a short time for her to see the real Hobbs and to realize her life is in danger, and there's only one way for her to get off that mountain.  Unfortunately for Nellie, her secrets won't stay buried forever.

This was an amazing book, one that I will think about long after finishing.  I love how the book was constructed with each narrators' point of view in a separate section, and each part added more depth to the story as a whole.  All five of these women were strong yet flawed, and I connected to each one.  Even the ghosts and the mountain itself were compelling characters in this eerie tale.

GHOST ON BLACK MOUNTAIN had me captivated from the first page.  The tone of the story was dark and unnerving, and there were many surprising twists and chilling moments throughout the story.  This was more than a ghost story.  It was also a testament to the powerful bond between a mother and child that nothing, not even death, can break.  GHOST ON BLACK MOUNTAIN has a place on my keeper shelf.  I give it 5 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Guest Post by Rebecca York

Since I was a kid, I’ve been interested in mythology. The tales of ancient gods and goddesses, warriors, priestesses and monsters fascinated me. Not just Greek and Roman mythology but also Norse.

When my editor at Berkley asked me to write something that wasn’t connected to my werewolf series, I started thinking about the ancient tales I’d loved so much. Of course, I came up with my own mythology, but its origins are in ancient Greece.

I wanted a strong conflict that could underlie more than one book and invented a centuries-old struggle between two powerful forces–one female and one male. The Ionian Priestesses who are blessed with psychic powers and the proud Minot Warriors.

In the first century BC, the Ionian Priestesses (rivals to the Oracle at Delphi) made a dangerous bargain with a group of cursed warriors called the Minot. In return for saving them from a barbarian invasion, the women took the Minot as consorts, but the uneasy truce disintegrated when the warriors tried to dominate their partners. The women escaped, taking refuge in various locations around the world. Finally they settled in Sedona, Arizona, drawn there by the spiritual power unique to the area.

For generations, they’ve run the Seven Sisters Spa in Sedona, Arizona. Still mistrusting men, they ruthlessly use them for procreation but never marry, giving their total loyalty to the sisterhood. With their psychic abilities, they make sure that any children born to them are girls.

In DARK WARRIOR, Minot, Jason Tyrone, and Ionian, Sophia Thalia, must confront truths about their heritages that neither wants to acknowledge. Only if Jason and Sophia dare to form a strong psychic bond can they save themselves and the Ionians from destruction. Or will the women discover Jason’s true identity and rip out his psychic powers first?

There’s a very specific curse hanging over the Minot, which I can’t tell you about because it will give away a major plot element. But it’s followed these men down through the ages. Jason and villain Rafe Garrison are each grappling with the dark aspects of their heritage. Each chooses to deal with it in a different way. Rafe could have been hero material, if he’d only allowed himself to take a different path. Jason has good reasons to choose differently. Because he’s half Ionian, he saw the loving relationship that his mother and father built against all odds. He wants the same thing, but it won’t be possible unless he finds a way to get Sophia to trust him.

Sophia presented some special problems for me. Because I made the Ionians into a sisterhood run almost like a religious order where the women give their allegiance to each other and not to any man, I realized I was going to have to write a different kind of heroine. Usually my heroines are strong but “sweet.” Sophia’s upbringing has given her a harder core, which made her a challenge for me to write.

Much of the story takes place in Sedona. I’d heard about the town with its edge of mysticism but never had a chance to visit. Going there gave me the feel of the red-rocked desert that surrounds the spa. My husband and I hiked to some of the vortexes (places of spiritual power) that are scattered around the area, took in the southwest architecture and vegetation, and, of course, enjoyed the local cuisine. One of my favorite places was an outdoor restaurant with tables along a small river where we watched ducks drift by in the water while we ate lunch. Seeing the river and the vegetation on its banks made me realize that the scenery in the area changes significantly where there’s a source of water, and I used that in the book.

I’d like to continue with the Ionians and the Minot, and I’ve set up conflicts in the book that can continue in additional stories. I’ve created unrest inside the Ionian order. And Tessa, Sophia’s sister, is a major character in the story. Her relationship with the villain has damaged her, and I’d like to find out how she gets back her self-esteem.

In the first century BC, Ionian Priestesses made a bargain with cursed warriors called the Minot. When the truce fell apart, the Minot remained cursed, and the Ionians remained mistrustful of men. In modern-day Arizona, Jason Tyrone, son of a Minot and an outcast Ionian, has come to reclaim his heritage.

At the Seven Sisters Spa, where the Ionian women live and hide their true identity, Jason falls in love with the beautiful Sophia Thalia-and their passion will re-ignite a conflict that could destroy the Ionians.

MISTRESS BY MARRIAGE Blog Tour: Interview and Giveaway with Maggie Robinson

Thank you so much for having me here! The title of this lovely blog is especially suitable for my latest release, Mistress by Marriage (Brava, September 2011). Heroine Caroline Christie has a serious secret, one that she thinks makes her highly unlovable. So when she picks Lord Edward Christie out of a line-up of eligible men, it’s quite deliberate. She doesn’t think Edward will ever show any emotion—he’s proper, even priggish. The Christie family is known for being cold and controlled. Everything has to be “just so” for Edward, but Caroline soon discovers she doesn’t have a bit of “so” in her. Their marriage proves to be a disaster everywhere but the bedroom.

“Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it” has never been so apt. Caroline and Edward regret that they got what they wanted and simply don’t know what to do with each other. All Caro’s attempts to fit into Edward’s rigid, regimented life fail spectacularly. And Edward? He feels like he’s married to an ever-erupting volcano. But even though he’s been burned, he cannot stay away.

Marital troubles are not the usual romance fare. Usually we close the book before the hero and heroine have to struggle with the reality of everyday relationships. You know, “You left the toilet seat up” sort of stuff. In this case, our Regency England chamber pot may have been left uncovered. J But I had tremendous fun (yes, the book is quite funny in spots) getting Edward to unbend and Caro to recognize her own worth so they could finally get their HEA. Author Theresa Romain calls the book “hot and hilarious.” I’ll take it.

I seem to be all about the secrets, because my novella “To Match a Thief” in Improper Gentlemen (Brava, August 2011) is loaded with them too. The hero Sir Simon Keith used to be a thief. What would society say if they knew he sprang from the Edinburgh slums? The heroine Lucy Dellamar is London’s most fabled courtesan…except she hasn’t made love to anyone in thirteen years. And her protector Lord Percy Ferguson? He’s very, very fond of Lucy’s hats. And dresses. And butler. They’ve gotten really good at keeping their secrets from the world.

MISTRESS BY MARRIAGE

Too late for cold feet

Baron Edward Christie prided himself on his reputation for even temperament and reserve. That was before he met Caroline Parker. Wedding a scandalous beauty by special license days after they met did not inspire respect for his sangfroid. Moving her to a notorious lovebirds’ nest as punishment for her flighty nature was perhaps also a blow. And of course talk has gotten out of his irresistible clandestine visits. Christie must put his wife aside—if only he can get her out of his blood first.

Too hot to refuse

Caroline Parker was prepared to hear the worst: that her husband had determined to divorce her, spare them both the torture of passion they can neither tame nor escape. But his plan is wickeder than any she’s ever heard. Life as his wife is suffocating. But she cannot resist becoming her own husband’s mistress…

 IMPROPER GENTLEMEN

“To Match a Thief” by Maggie Robinson

Ex-pickpocket Sir Simon Keith can now afford the best of everything. But London’s most-desired courtesan is his lost love Lucy. Now Simon will need his wits and his considerably large…wiles to win his way back into her bed—and into her heart.

“Hair Trigger Palace” by Diane Whiteside

He rules Colorado’s most glittering gambling palace. Justin Talbot never does something for nothing. If daring Boston aristocrat Charlotte Morland needs his protection from a dangerous enemy, he’ll make her business his pleasure…

“A Knack for Trouble” by Mia Marlowe

Lord Aidan Stonemere didn’t go from prison to a title by playing by society’s rules. If he wants something, he takes it. Rosalinde Burke didn’t object to being taken. Once. To keep her from marrying a proper viscount, Aidan will do whatever it takes to remind her how deliciously good being improper feels…

Interview with Michele Sinclair

I'm pleased to welcome historical romance author Michele Sinclair to Book of Secrets!  Her latest book, TEMPTING THE HIGHLANDER, was released this month.  Hi, Michele!

Please tell us a little about your latest release, TEMPTING THE HIGHLANDER.

It Begins As A Ploy...And Becomes A Pleasure. But Raelynd's designated intended interests her far less than his quietly powerful brother Crevan, a man born to lead. Though bound by honor and committed to his sworn duty, Crevan cannot resist a taste of Raelynd's crimson lips when offered - and then another and another - until the unlikely couple is entangled in both a public deception and each other's hearts...

Raelynd Schellden has determined that she does not want to marry. Yet as the oldest of Lord Schellden’s twin daughters, it is a choice that may not be hers to make. After the humiliating set down of her last suitor, the King has chosen a Low-land raised Scottish nobleman from his court to marry one of Lord Schellden’s daughters and become the Schellden heir.

Desperate to protect his clan from an outsider who doesn't understand, or care for the ways of his clan, Lord Schellden hatches a plan. If he can catch his daughters in a compromising situation and force an engagement using his long time alliance with the neighboring McTiernay clans he can maintain his clan's safety and also have a viable heir for the King.

After watching the McTiernay twins Craig and Crevan follow his twin daughters into the stables, Lord Schellden does catch the twins together. He was dismayed, however, when what he interrupted wasn’t as compromising as he had hoped. He pulled Craig and Crevan aside, and coming to a compromise, he the McTiernays. Fake an engagement for a month. That would be long enough for Lord Schellden struck a deal with to convince the Lowlander that he didn’t have what it would take to become a Highland Laird.

Things don’t go as completely planned, and as Raelynd and Crevan become closer they realize that they are engaged to the wrong person, even though the engagement is false. This becomes clear especially when the Lowland Noble proves to be more than adequate for the job of Schellden Laird.

What was your source of inspiration behind this book?

Like many, my characters are my inspiration, but I also really try to write about topics that mean something to people in today’s world, even though I write historicals. This book in particular is about “breaking out of the box.” Ever have someone tell you that you should do this for a living? For example, good debaters are often told to become lawyers, empathetic people should be doctors, etc. Sometimes we hear it so much, we actually adopt other people’s opinions as if they were our own! Coupled with a general need to make others happy and a willingness to sacrifice our happiness for our loved ones, I think all of us eventually come to a point when we stand back and think, who am I? What do I want to do? This can be hard to answer and oftentimes hard to enact, but if we are truly to become happy we need to look inside ourselves and dictate the course of our lives and not let others do it for us. Crevan has to “look in the mirror” so to speak and make some decisions that will affect him and those around him. Raelynd’s story is more simple, but again familiar. She has to learn that leading is not being bossy and that an effective leader (or Lady of the Castle) requires respect.

Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in your book/series? Were there challenges or obstacles you had to overcome?

Hmm. I had two challenges. The first is lack of time. Time is a killer. I have two small children and a very full time, challenging job that usually requires me to work more than 40 hours a week. This leaves very little opportunity to write. But that challenge was nothing compared to the one I have had to overcome more recently that resulted in my becoming a single mother. Such loss made it hard for a while to want to be romantic. And then there was the fear….could I be? Well, I have since finished writing CHRISTMAS KNIGHT, wrote THE GUARDIAN, TEMPTING THE HIGHLANDER, and refined PROMISES. But now lack of time is even more of a challenge!

Who was your favorite character to write and why?

Oh this is hard. I like Cole from the third book. He has a special place in my heart. Clyde will take readers on a journey some might not understand if they have never had a loved one touched by war. But the most fun to write is Conan. Because we all know people like him. Good guy but often a pompous schmuck and you just want to be there when they get their “comeuppance” as my grandmother would say. As the author I am always there!

Which character was the most challenging to write and why?

Hardest to write…Usually Laurel. She needs to drive the story, not take over. Her good sense cannot replace that of the main character. She cannot “grow” for them.

We usually never talk about villains in books during interviews. Share with us who or what is the antagonist of your story.

I am SO glad you asked this question. When I first started thinking about this particular story I thought I wanted what I’m calling an “anti-antagonist”. Basically I wanted to write a Highland story that didn’t have a major battle at the end where the good and the bad guy battle it out over the girl. I also wanted a story where at the end…you realize there was no bad guy. Where the antagonist is the catalyst, but not evil…You’ll love Cyric. When I sent this to one of my trusted reviewers at first she said there is NO way I will ever like this guy…but in the end…she did a lot. Cyric, like Crevan, has been defining his life by how others see him, not as he sees himself. This story is absolutely the funniest I have written to date. (Of course that is IMHO LOL, but my editor and publisher both told me the same!)

What was one of the most interesting things you learned in researching your book?

When my editor asked me to do a Christmas series (can you write a Christmas book? “Of course!” I replied, not having a CLUE what I would write about…), I thought about it and I had always wanted to write a Beauty and the Beast story because it is my very favorite. So I kind of played around with the idea and what ended up was not a B&B, but something very touching nonetheless. I always wanted to know more about the 12 Days of Christmas and the stuff I learned was so fascinating that I actually included a little historical blurb at the beginning of each chapter (or day). This is rarely done in romance but even the editors and copy editors said keep it! You learn about England’s Boxing Day, the origins of “Do Re Mi Fa…”, piggy banks, etc. I love all the research, but this time it answered questions I didn’t even know I had :)

What makes your book stand out from others in the same genre?

I don’t know about standing out. I rarely read my genre so I might not stand out at all! I have been told that unlike some out there my heroines are usually smart and pretty independent. Weak, helpless women aren’t my style.

And, as I hinted to before, all my stories have a theme. The first, THE HIGHLANDER’S BRIDE, is a light read that set the premise for the series. These two fun characters show up in active roles in every book and explore sharing personal responsibility. We all have aspects of our lives we feel like we need to shoulder alone, but when you have a partner in life, the miracle is discovering you don’t have to. The second in the series, TO WED A HIGHLANDER, focused on pride. How it can strengthen a relationship, but also damage and even destroy it. We all have pride and sometimes we let it stand in the way of getting our heart’s desires. The third book in the series is about promises. We make promises to ourselves and to others. Sometimes out of instinct to protect ourselves from pain, sometimes in revenge, sometimes to ensure someone is protected, helped, etc. Promises, especially long term ones, can affect how we go about our lives and choices we make. They are also something that we need to believe in, trust in, (such as marriage vows) even when circumstances tell us not to.

Book four explores people’s perception of you and sometime people assume roles others give them and how choices we “fell into” can govern our lives. Book five (the next one) is about the transition from friends to lovers. The whole “When Harry Met Sally” question – can men and women just be friends? Crevan’s story is less about him growing up (he does) but more about what is the definition of a home and family life. Clyde’s story is about PTSD and how his and Meghan’s love sees them both through things. My family background has a lot of military and this story means a lot to me.

The first Christmas book is about the healing after experiencing a physical trauma, but with a twist. The characters accept who they are, but they don’t realize that they never really give others a chance to accept them as well. The second in that series is about post partum depression (something I suffered for nearly a year with my second child) and the third is the famous “love triangle”, but I look at how and why we choose the men we do.

The Regency series coming out is about friendship and how for us women it drives so much in our lives. The second in that story explores the “follow up” story—something I really wanted to do. Romance often has two people who are so different fall in love and get married. But being so different, is it really all happiness afterward? That story talks about how falling in love is the first…and the easiest part. Accepting the one you love is a greater challenge.

Well, hopefully this answered that question :)! I could go on, but hopefully these give you an idea of what intrigues me and motivates me and just who might be interested in reading one my stories.

The Highlander's Bride (Zebra Debut) To Wed A Highlander Desiring the Highlander

What is the best part of being a writer?  What is the most difficult part?

Having the ending EXACTLY the way you want it to be. Have you ever watched a movie and thought…no! That’s wrong! That’s not how it should end….

The most difficult? Time and managing everything. Writing the story is just one piece. Responding for fan mail, maintaining websites, interviews :), edit reviews, workshops, helping as a judge for contests...

What is your writing process like?

Interesting question. I have a mental picture of the characters and who they are (quirks, personality, issues…) before I start writing, but I went to a lecture at my local RWA chapter and heard the phrase “Write it wrong till you can write it right.” Genius.

So now I just write what the characters tell me. I start out with the basic idea - X goes to see Y, they have a fight and Y leaves resulting in X feeling very guilty and afraid they just might have made a big mistake…perhaps the biggest of their life.

So I know the gist of the scene, but then I just watch the details in my head and write it down as if I am trying to capture a movie I am seeing. Sometimes it is smooth and sometimes it is jerky, but I have found that you just put it down and move on. I don’t rewrite until the very last chapter is complete. Because it isn’t until then, at that moment, do I really know where my characters are going and developing. Then when I go back I can write with much more clarity and it is typically pretty straight forward. Otherwise, I would fall in that “rewrite until it is perfect loop”—something many find impossible to break.

Not sure if I answered the question, but this is the process I follow.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Didn’t. I quipped one day that I could write a book in my sleep I read so many. I was dared and took them up on it! I was shocked and in many ways still am that I, who cannot keep a journal if my life depended on it, can actually write a complete book.

Why do modern women still crave the alpha male in romance novels?

We read romance to read about heroes we fantasize being with. This is why there are so many very different writers who are successful. They appeal to a different market. Personally, I like men who are strong and to a healthy degree possessive and protective. I also want them to have soft spots that are only really noticeable and understood by very few. Men who usually don’t open themselves up but rather, is shocked to find out that their soul mate snuck in the back door into their hearts. Who they are, not what they look like, makes them attractive. They protect without control, though they like to control. They are strong yet can make even a strong woman feel feminine. They are good people who desire good for those around them. Then again, while they are tolerant fellows to a point, they will not hesitate to draw blood to protect those they love. May not be realistic in today’s world, nor historically common in this period, but these are my heroes and they have to be such type of men to love and be loved by the women of whom I write.

What does romance mean to you?

Someone I cared very much about wrote this once and with very minor changes here is their (and also my) answer.

1. Expressing to your significant other, they look nice, or giving them a compliment
2 . Physical touch - not sex here, but squeezing of a hand or shoulder
3. Lovingly running fingers thru hair, face finger treatment
4. Opening a car door / appreciating the car door being opened
5. A Simple smile
6. Flowers if the person likes gifts / a Hershey kiss in the briefcase
7. Walking arm in arm
8. Swinging on the back porch swing
9. Holding hands
10. Talking for hours about the day, future plans, goals, dreams
11. Quality time with each other
12. Calling someone just to let them know you are thinking of them or I.E..
13. Love notes, or cards
14. Special treat hidden in a special place
15. Edification
16. Cuddling
17. Cooking together for nice quiet evening
18. Doing the dishes, taking out the trash,
19. Shoulder to cry on
20. Looking out for each other
21. Being gentle
22. Turning over remote control
23. Sharing the little things of life
24. Out for Dinner and slow dancing
25. Intimacy

That friend (a man) finished by writing this: A romantic success: Being romantic means doing all the things that were mentioned above, and more. This should speak love to a woman more than anything else. It tells her you care, and you appreciate her. It says I will go out of my way to make you feel cherished and honored. In doing these things roadblocks and barriers will be broken down and each will be able to look into each others eyes and see that I am a part of you and you are a part of me. This shouts out to them I LOVE YOU, and she knows and can feel your heart. These too feel like they are very compatible and have become best friends, even soul mates, they are inseparable and will always be together into eternity.

A romantic failure:
Men many times are naive and do not feel the above things are either required or have any importance - tragic mistake. Nor do they read minds very well, nor do they speak romance fluently. Even if a woman tells them what she wants and needs sometimes Ad nauseam it will not sink in. If this is not done and help out the poor sap he will not be educated, it is destined for failure. Another component of the equation is, sometimes even when men are educated as what to do, or what they should do they become lazy, uninterested, complacent, worn down, storm battered, and broken this can even lead to things beyond a romantic failure and perhaps become more dark.

What was the last amazing book you read?

EE Doc Smith's the LENSMAN series. Phenomenal. No not romance. Written several decades ago but you would never know because a good story remains relevant. Just your good old good vs. evil story, but incredibly well-written.

What books have most influenced your life?

I read a LOT of science fiction. Those authors are brilliant and because of the context of their stories, I often evaluate my world a little differently after reading a book. They see the environment, people, the future differently and cause me to consider other possibilities as well.

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?

My kids. My kids. My kids.

What can readers expect next from you?

I have the McTiernay series, a Regency series, a Christmas series and now a vampire analog (which is very different as this is totally off my typical writing genre).

McTiernay is out this August, the Guardian is out in September, next is the Regency, then another McTiernay, then the wrap up to the Regency, the McTiernay and the Christmas series.

Thank you for being with us today, Michele!
