Review: UNLEASHED

Sourcebooks; Oct 2011

Book Blurb:
What if you suddenly discovered your own powers were beyond anything you'd ever imagined...

Samantha Logan's childhood home had always been a haven, but everything changed while she was away. She has a gorgeous new neighbor, Malcolm, who introduces her to the amazing world of the dream-walking, shapeshifting Amoveo clans...but what leaves her reeling with disbelief is when he tells her she's one of them...

And shock turns to terror as Samantha falls prey to the deadly enemy determined to destroy the Amoveo, and the only chance she has to come into her true powers is to trust in Malcolm to show her the way...

Review:

Sara Humphreys has taken a fresh approach to shapeshifter paranormal romance in UNLEASHED.  Her world of the Amoveo race is unique.  There are ten Amoveo clans of shapeshifters, including wolves, bears, foxes and eagles.  Not only do they shapeshift from human to animal, they have other special abilities like telepathy.  The Amoveo live unnoticed among humans, except for one group called the Caedo.  The Caedo are their ancient enemies set to destroy them all.

The author did a wonderful job introducing the reader to the Amoveo world with Malcolm and Samantha's story.  Malcolm knows that among his kind, he is predestined to have one mate.  If he does not find her, he will never have offspring, and he will die young.  He knows that Sam is his mate, yet she has no idea that she is a hybrid, half Amoveo wolf, half human.  He visits Sam in her dreams, hoping to open her mind to his world.

UNLEASHED started a bit slow, but really picked up about half-way though.  Sam and Malcolm were likable characters that I could easily connect with.  Malcolm wasn't overly "alpha" in his behavior, which I think is what Sam needed to accept the situation.  In addition to the romance between Malcolm and Sam, there is a mystery too.  Someone is trying to kill Sam, and it's up to Malcolm to keep his mate safe.  I enjoyed trying to figure out who was out to get her.  It was not who I expected at all!

UNLEASHED is a solid start to a new and original PNR series.  With ten different Amoveo clans, there is great potential for this series to really take off.  I give UNLEASHED 3.75 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The Wild Sight
by Loucinda McGary

He is soon involved in the archaeological excavation on his family’s land and meets American Rylie Powell. Her father walked out on the family when she was a toddler, and she now believes that Donovan’s father is also hers. Donovan knows in his heart this cannot be true as the attraction between them is palpable. In between checking out DNA tests and family histories, the two become involved with murders past and present stemming from the Troubles, a quest that requires Donovan’s gift. Northern Ireland’s violent past combined with supernatural elements add an intriguing twist to this modern love story.

(Belated!) Cozy Mystery Monday (Review and Giveaway): LIVER LET DIE

Berkley; Oct 2011

Book Blurb:
Jordan McAllister dreams of becoming a popular sports columnist but gets stuck in a po-dunk town writing personal ads for a small time newspaper. When she's offered a chance to fill in for a local food critic off on sick leave, she jumps at the chance rationalizing that it's one step closer to her dream. However, when a dead body is found underneath her apartment stairwell with her name and number along with it, she becomes the prime suspect, as well as the main course on the murder menu.

Review:

I think it was the clever title that first drew me to this book.  "Liver Let Die: A Clueless Cook Mystery" fit the story perfectly.  The clueless cook in question is Jordan McAllister.  Her ambition in life is to be a big time sports reporter, but instead she's stuck doing the personal ads for a small town newspaper.  When the paper's food critic takes a leave of absence, Jordan's boss insists that she take over the weekly Kitchen Kupboard column.  There are only two problems: Jordan can't cook, and she knows nothing about gourmet food.

Jordan's first assignment is to review a new steak house in town.  Oh no!  Up pops another problem: She doesn't eat beef.  Her waiter, J.T., suggests she order the very expensive foie gras.  Of course, Jordan is clueless as to what it actually is, and after taking a tiny nibble, she ends up hiding the rest of it in her purse.  Ruining the purse wasn't the worst thing about the dinner; later on, her waiter is found stabbed to death outside of her apartment.  Because J.T. was on his way to visit her, the police suspect she is the murderer.

Overall, I thought LIVER LET DIE was a fun read and well constructed cozy mystery.  There were two stories going on that were loosely intertwined, and you don't find out until the end which one J.T.'s death fit into.  This book was full of colorful characters, humorous moments and witty dialogue.  One thing that had me giggling was how Jordan would take her friends' common recipes and make them "gourmet" for her column by giving the dishes foreign names.  For the most part, Jordan was a very likable, down-to-earth "every woman," but she did have a couple TSTL moments.  Though, it was funny because she pointed out her stupid moments as they were happening.  There's also a budding romance between Jordan and the mysterious Alex Montgomery, someone she's not quite sure she can trust.

The book includes several recipes that were mentioned in the story.  I especially want to try the Budin de Papitas Fritas con Pollo. I give LIVER LET DIE 3.5 out of 5 stars!

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Happy "ADAM" Release Day! Guest Post by Jacquelyn Frank

Hey all! Guess what today is? Yeah, okay, so you don’t have to guess. It’s RELEASE DAY!! WOOT!!!! ADAM!! Book six in the Nightwalkers series, comes out today! YAY! Okay, so I am a little overexcited. What can I say? These past few months have been incredibly hard on me, so I am taking my excitement where I can get it. And here is definitely where I get it…

Oh don’t tell me you haven’t heard about ADAM! The next installment in the NIGHTWALKERS series? Come on people, get with it! You’ve been dying for this release for almost three years! Look, I’m not teasing this time! I have the cover to prove it.

Ain’t he purty? I love his chesticles. They are my favorite.

But in case you’re a newbie and haven’t read my work here is a little insight into my Nightwalker world…

There have always been people who live on the fringes of society, but what if there were entire species living on the fringe of human existence? We tell the tales of vampires and other things that go bump in the night, but imagine if there were entire cultures living alternate lives and life cycles to day-worshiping humans. This is part of the premise of my Nightwalkers series. Demons, Vampires, Lycanthropes and more, each its on race, its own society, living outside of human discovery. (For the most part. Apparently we’ve crossed paths enough to create our monstrous perceptions of them.) The series starts with the Demon race and slowly blossoms out into others, both known and unknown. They are complex cultures with histories they champion and histories they regret just as we do. When their existence begins to bleed into ours, it makes for some very intriguing discoveries about how very similar we all can be at our core…and how sometimes fate has plans for us we have absolutely no control over…wouldn’t you agree? So with that being said I hope you enjoy this small taste of what’s to come when fate decides she’s in the mood to play

    WARNING: YOU MIGHT GET WET!!

He changed form in the blink of an eye, morphing from man to a deluge of water that dashed against her face and body. But unlike normal water he did not cascade off of her and fall to the ground. Instead, he flowed over her supple body, slowly washing over and around her, covering her inch by inch. He felt the smoothness of her skin beneath his touch, the weight of her breasts…tasted the hard points of her nipples.

She gasped in shock when he first hit her, but that shock quickly changed to something deeper and far sultrier. The sound that erupted from her as he flowed over her was nothing short of purest sin. He took satisfaction in it.

And even as he covered the most intimate inches of her skin with his exploration, he knew he was going too far. It had gone too far the moment he had sat in the brush to stare at her as she bathed. But this, what he was doing now, it was a whole other level of perversion, and as glorious as she felt, he knew he was stepping way over the line.

Did you enjoy that? Now rush out and buy the book!

I’d like to take this opportunity to give you all cyber hugs, answer a few questions and say thank you SO much for your devotion to this series. That has allowed it to be translated into over half a dozen foreign languages including German, Thai, Portuguese an now the entire set is available in audio format by Tantor Media! (The fabulous Xe Sands does our gang of men and their ladies proud!) Anyway, I have wondrous things planned for you and this world in the future. Follow my on my website, Facebook, Twitter and blog and I’ll keep you up to date on me, my books, my life, my peeves, my cats, my kid…basically all the floatsam of my life. Oh, and on Facebook we have a neat roleplaying page you ought to join called Jacquelyn Frank’s Nightwalker World official role-play page. You get to watch actors play your favorite NIGHTWALKER characters, get to oogle the Hump Day Hunks on Wednesdays and a variety of other things as well. Oh, and the person who plays Ruth (cough) is sick and twisted and does a FABULOUS job, if I do say so myself. Hehehe. So…on to all the juicy details my avid and diehard readers have been waiting patiently to know…

*Yes, I do have plans for Tristan from the Shadowdwellers to get his HEA eventually. What form and time this takes shape in is a grey area at present, but there is an intention.

*Yes, I do have plans for the next installment in the Nightwalkers universe, and it is going to be spectacular! And as soon as it’s in writing you all will be the first to know because I will be shouting it from the mountaintops.

*My original intent when I finished Drink of Me was for it to be a stand-alone title. However, after massive amounts of fan mail begging me to continue, I have decided to give the idea some careful consideration.

If you haven’t heard of me or tried me before, I hope you will. A good place to start is either Book One of the Nightwalkers series, JACOB, or my stand alone title DRINK OF ME! I hope you pick up ADAM. It definitely stands on its own even if you have not read the first. (But I, personally, am a stickler for reading things in their correct order)

Here is a sample of JACOB on audio, ENJOY!

    Listen here:

Also don’t forget SUPERNATURAL, an anthology that gives my devoted readers a long-awaited insight into what exactly transpires between Kane and Corrine that very first Samhain night. Remember, Corrine was near death that night, and Demon instincts don’t make leeway for fragility in a mate. (Especially since Demon mates are not usually fragile humans!) So what’s a Demon obsessed with mating to do? Check it out and see, In Stores Now!!

Thank you so much for having me, It’s been a blast!
    Hugs & Kitties,
    Jacki Frank

Jacquelyn lives in the Western North Carolina mountain area around Asheville with her ten male cats (no, that isn’t a typo) and about ten thousand voices in her head. Rather than take heavy meds to chase them away, (the voices, not the cats) she indulges them and brings their stories to life. She’s lived in many places and worked many jobs, which she says makes her ‘colorful, not inconstant.’ She is always rescuing one stray or another, be they animal or human, and thinks the invention of electronic reading devices could only be improved if they could just manage to make them smell like ink and paper. A self-admitted techno-geek, she loves all kinds of gadgetry.

She believes every romance should have a happily ever after.

Interview with Natasha Blackthorne and International Giveaway

Please help me welcome author Natasha Blackthorne to Book of Secrets!  Her latest release is the historical erotic romance GREY'S LADY.  Hi, Natasha!

Please tell us a little about GREY'S LADY.

Grey's Lady is the story of a poor but beautiful young woman who works hard in her half-siblings' struggling shop. But she's been educated above her current situation. Spirited and sensual, she finds her life dreary and feels trapped. She has a secret life where she plays seductress to wealthy, handsome gentlemen. She does it for the thrill of conquest and erotic pleasure.

She's been hurt deeply by life and men and she's just not interested in trading independence for security. She's not looking for either marriage or protection from a man. Her motto is to seduce a man once, love him only once and then leave him burning.

Grey is the owner of one of the largest shipping/mercantile companies in 1812 America, raised by a stern, profit minded Calvinistic father. Wealthy and powerful Grey is in total control of his life and his world. He likes it that way. He uses his wealth to control his relationships. He likes to have women admire and depend on him for the luxury and sexual pleasure he can give them.

Beth targets handsome dark haired, silver-eyed Grey as a sexual conquest. Grey doesn't know he's about to be hit by a force he cannot control. Beth doesn't know she's about to meet her match.

When their eyes first meet, they see the emptiness the other feels. A brief, torrid sexual encounter in Grey's closed carriage starts a chain of events that neither of them is prepared for. Beth is determined that each encounter they have is their last. Grey is determined to gain her commitment and add her to his cache of mistresses. Which one--the merchant prince or the poor-but-beautiful seductress--will win?

What was your source of inspiration behind this book?

I find the idea of how our sexuality touches us at such a deep basic level fascinating. It can strip away all intellectual defenses. At it’s best, sexual intimacy can bring about a surrender that encourages wholeness.

Grey’s Lady is a story that came to me while researching another story. I read a book about social history that detailed power and sex relations between men and women in Philadelphia in this time. Power relations between the sexes were really complex and not quite what popular consensus about this time period leads one to assume. That world was very interesting to me. It got me thinking on all the possibilities.

One day Grey came into my mind as a character and he showed me this opening scene. It is a gray, rainy day and he’s in the bookseller’s. He sees this incredibly beautiful, feminine looking woman and exchanges a glance with her. For a split second, he sees beneath her facade and catches a glimpse at how sad she is. And it echoes his own emptiness and sadness that he’s suppressed so much, he’s become numb to it. And after this moment, he is never the same. He goes from being a man in total control of his emotional life into a man consumed by the need to possess this woman.

Beth has a secret life. She plays seductress to men—well not just men but wealthy, powerful Gentlemen. And she controls the interaction by being the seducer and also by limiting the affair to one assignation. She’s an extremely sex positive, uninhibited, sensual woman but only in her secret life with the gentlemen. In her normal life, she’s a devoted sister and aunt and works hard in her family’s struggling shop. She’s excited by dynamic, powerful, handsome men but she feels she can never expect marriage with one of them because of her social status. Philadelphians in this time use the terms Better Sort, Middling Sort and Lower Sort. She’s very aware of social position and social power and her lack thereof.

Grey is millionaire merchant prince in a time when millionaires are rare. He uses his wealth to control his mistresses through their greed for luxury and he doesn’t value emotional depth in his relationships. He just wants sexual convenience. He also likes to feel needed and appreciated but only for what he can provide in material ways and erotic pleasure.

They both try to keep control over others and to keep distance while attempting to fill their emotional needs through sex but they are failing to do so adequately. They both feel empty inside when they meet each other. They are isolated by their secrets and their self-protection.

When they come together and they have this overwhelming attraction and explosive interaction, the question becomes can deep sexual intimacy work a miracle and lead to the opening of their hearts? Can they save each other from their isolation, from their auto-suppression of their true selves?

For readers who are not familiar with your books, please share some background information on your series.

The Carte Blanche Series is all about powerful gentlemen and their seductive mistresses. Unconventional relationships with fairy tale endings playing out against the dramatic settings of New York City and Philadelphia in the early years of the Republic.

Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in your book/series? Were there challenges or obstacles you had to overcome?

I spent about six months totally immersing myself in the time period. I read a lot of biography and social history. I prefer to build my characters from the bones outward.

I want to understand their world. What do they eat on a daily basis? What does the air they breathe smell like? What memes and philosophies are they bombarded with each day? How does it feel to be dressed in their clothes, what do the fabrics feel like on their skin, are they constricted in their movements?

Yes, the story and the characters are more important than the history details. But if I don’t understand my characters from the bones out, I cannot create their world nor recreate how they act and react with any kind of authentic feel.

Even if they go against their society, I need to understand what it feels like to be in that society and that world before I can know how to show why this person believes and reacts different from the norm. I need to understand what it feels like to be in that society and living by those rules before I can know what it feels like to go against those social norms. Any behaviour that is atypical to that society, I need to justify with the character’s past and what shaped them.

I still do research as I am writing for specific questions of the plot but I need to have that foundation built first.

We usually never talk about villains in books during interviews. Share with us who or what is the antagonist of your story.

The antagonists in this story are the inner demons that both Beth and Grey deal with and how these hidden factors affect their interaction. The result is an explosive battle of wills. In Grey's Lady we mostly just see the results but the sequel White Lace and Promises gets deeper into these issues.

Who is your target audience? Have you been able to crossover into other audiences too?

I want to entertain those readers who love historicals and a character driven, deeply psychological/emotional/erotic plot.

How do you create your characters' names?

When I do research, I collect lists of names for the period, both first names and surnames. I keep separate lists for America and England. If it is not a period name then I look deeper into their back-story to see why they would be given this unusual name.

Why do modern women still crave the alpha male in romance novels?

Probably the same reason why men are fascinated with femme fatales. :)

What can readers expect next from you?

I have one novella and several novels coming soon from Total E-Bound Publishing.

White Lace and Promises, a novella and the second book in the Carte Blanche series, is the sequel to Grey’s Lady and as I said, it gets deeper into Grey and Beth’s inner demons and how they come together to fight them. It is scheduled for release Dec 26, 2011.

Alex’s Angel is the third book in the Carte Blanche series and it is scheduled for release on February 28, 2012. It is a full-length novel set in Philadelphia in 1793. Here is a short blurb: In the wake of a devastating epidemic, sheltered Emily Eliot finds herself alone, making her own decisions for the first time. When desperation leads her to sell her virtue, she walks straight into trouble.

Enter one gorgeous, golden haired gentleman bent on protecting her…Alexander Dalton came to the Blue Duck Tavern seeking to lose himself in sexual pleasure. Yet when he saw the delicate and vulnerable young woman, he couldn’t turn away. But he needs her to believe in him a lot more than she needs his protection…Alex’s charming smile hides a dark secret that could destroy their chance at happiness. Will their passion burn them up or bring them together?

The next book in the Carte Blanche series is titled Emily's Seduction and it is scheduled for release April 23, 2012.

I have another full-length novel, an English Regency scheduled for release on April 09,2012.

I am currently at work on a novel for the Carte Blanche series and have several other novels and a few shorter stories planned in my notebooks.

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?

    History, Cats, Reading, Music

Where can readers find you on the web?

Can you leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from your book?

I would love to. I think this scene represents some of their conflict. They are both determined to be the one who is making the conquest of the other throughout the story. Just FYI, Total E-Bound is a U.K. Publisher and they print in British English:
Impulse seized her and she caught hold of his lapels. “Kiss me.”

He leaned closer. Heavens, anyone could come along and catch them. Oh the risk… But her breath quickened and her nipples stiffened, straining against her stays. She closed her eyes, tilted her head up. Waited.

    And waited.

“How many men since me?” He laid his large hand at the base of her throat and a thrill went chasing through her. “Look me in the eye.”

Her lids fluttered open and his gaze pierced into her with such intensity she gasped. “It has only been two weeks.”

    “Answer me, Beth.”

Another thrill trembled through her. Fear or anticipation? She couldn’t say. “None.”
Still holding her throat, he studied her for several long moments. She set her jaw, refusing to waver under his scrutiny.

He bent and his mouth pressed hers, hard and hasty. Passion spiraled, took her soaring to the stars. Lassitude weakened her and wetness seeped between her legs. He lifted his head. She tightened her hands on his lapels, trying to pull him back. He resisted, his eyes trained on her like a stag with a doe.

Kiss me. Just kiss me, you arrogant jackanapes.

“Now, go.” He released her, set her veil back in place and left her there.

She gaped at his departing back, watching how he moved, so tall and proud. Over-proud. Did he have any idea what a rarefied class he found himself in? She didn’t go around asking just any man to kiss her. She had very high standards and she shared herself with only a select few. She was bestowing quite an honour on him and yet he reacted as if she were the one who ought to be grateful. And to add insult to injury, he hadn’t even kissed her. Not truly.

Interview with Erin Quinn and Book Giveaway

I am pleased to welcome Erin Quinn to Book of Secrets today!  She is the author of the Mists of Ireland series, and the final book, HAUNTING EMBRACE, has just been released.  Welcome, Erin!

Please tell us a little about your latest release, HAUNTING EMBRACE.

“A SERIES THAT TAKES MY BREATH AWAY.”— Fresh Fiction

    ENDLESS LOVE
Within Meaghan Ballagh surges the blood of an ancient sorceress whose long ago love for the druid Áedán ended in treachery—a fate that ensnares Meaghan herself when she is thrust into the past. She can feel the desire between the sorceress and the handsome druid rise inside her. To ensure her survival, she must piece together the history of the woman who haunts her and the man who needs her.

    ETERNAL BETRAYAL
Áedán recognizes Meaghan. He always will. For the spirit of his one true love—and immortal enemy—is in her. A woman for whom Áedán once risked everything he ever had only to be repaid with betrayal and eternal damnation. This time, he’s not going to let Meaghan escape—because together they have the power to change their destiny.

As the passion between them grows, so do their fears of arousing an ancient, haunted, and forbidden love, and for changing a past that could irrevocably destroy the future.

For readers who are not familiar with your books, please share some background information on your Mists of Ireland series.

The Mists of Ireland series takes readers to Ireland to meet the families MacGrath and Ballagh. For centuries these two families have been entwined in love, jealousy and the mysticism surrounding an ancient tome called the Book of Fennore. Surrounded by lore and superstition, this ancient Book wreaks havoc on humanity—but when it falls into the hands of the MacGraths and Ballaghs, it ignites powers within them that make them its most formidable enemy. Reviewers and readers alike have called the Mists of Ireland series “filled with fascinating characters, wonderful detail, and the beautiful scenery of Ireland” and “An enthralling read. Quinn’s mélange of paranormal, time travel and romance is outstanding!”

Who was your favorite character to write and why?

I would have to say the most interesting character is Áedán -- a man who begins my series as not quite human and not very nice. In fact, Áedán has been trapped in the Book of Fennore--cursed to spend eternity there for millennia. But then he meets Meaghan Ballagh who somehow saves him from the hell he'd thought never to escape.

I loved turning my villian into a hero and writing all the complex emotions that would follow a man who'd done so much wrong for so long and now wanted to change.

How many books do you have planned for the series?

HAUNTING EMBRACE brings the Mists of Ireland series to a close. There are four books in all: HAUNTING BEAUTY (Book 1), HAUNTING WARRIOR (Book 2), HAUNTING DESIRE (Book 3), and HAUNTING EMBRACE (Book 4).

Thought he books are all linked by a story line, they can be read out of order as each was written to stand alone.

What makes your books stand out from others in the same genre?

Time and again reviewers comment that my books are not like any other. I think what makes this true is my own love of diverse fiction. I remember when I was younger reading Stephen King and loving it--but wishing there had been a romance in it. And then I'd read a romance and wish there'd been some thrills and chills. With my books, I try to blend those two passions--compelling, sometimes spine tingling stories with a rich romance.

He found his fingers tunneling beneath her hair to cup her head in his palms. It seemed they moved without his thought or will. He tilted her face back so he could look at her. Her skin glowed like ivory, her eyes dark and drowned with emotion, her mouth soft and full. She’d bitten her lips in her anxiety, and now they were red, a vibrant splash of color in the gray world.

Her eyes widened as he lowered his mouth to hers, but she didn’t turn away, nor did she push him away. He felt the pending rush of fate slam into him as his lips touched hers. Thoughts of the stolen moments on the cliffs that afternoon had all but consumed him. He’d craved the sensation of her arms clinging tight, the softness of her breasts crushed against the wall of his chest, her hips pressed to his...

Now he felt like an anchored ship whipped by a storm that refused to let it idle securely at bay. He ripped free in a powerful surge, back¬ing her to the wall, needing that solid surface to keep from hurling himself out to sea.

The eye of the storm was within him, the fury of it all around.

    THE RESTORER
    By Amanda Stevens

My name is Amelia Gray. I'm a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. In order to protect myself from the parasitic nature of the dead, I've always held fast to the rules passed down from my father. But now a haunted police detective has entered my world and everything is changing, including the rules that have always kept me safe.

It started with the discovery of a young woman's brutalized body in an old Charleston graveyard I've been hired to restore. The clues to the killer—and to his other victims—lie in the headstone symbolism that only I can interpret. Devlin needs my help, but his ghosts shadow his every move, feeding off his warmth, sustaining their presence with his energy. To warn him would be to invite them into my life. I've vowed to keep my distance, but the pull of his magnetism grows ever stronger even as the symbols lead me closer to the killer and to the gossamer veil that separates this world from the next.

    By Ann Hite

Once a person leaves the mountain, they never come back, not really. They're lost forever.

Nellie Clay married Hobbs Pritchard without even noticing he was a spell conjured into a man, a walking, talking ghost story. But her mama knew. She saw it in her tea leaves: death. Folks told Nellie to get off the mountain while she could, to go back home before it was too late. Hobbs wasn't nothing but trouble. He'd even killed a man. No telling what else. That mountain was haunted, and soon enough, Nellie would feel it too. One way or another, Hobbs would get what was coming to him. The ghosts would see to that...

Told in the stunning voices of five women whose lives are inextricably bound when a murder takes place in rural Depression-era North Carolina, Ann Hite's unforgettable debut spans generations and conjures the best of Southern folk-lore—mystery, spirits, hoodoo, and the incomparable beauty of the Appalachian landscape.

What is your favorite spooky book?

Thank you for stopping by my blog!  Have a wonderful weekend.
